No specific mention of MU, but an interesting take on transfers around the NCAA…

So, there are a lot of transfers and it isn't just Buzz's moral failing.

Two things come to mind.. First we beat George Washington and they are having a good year so that counts as a decent win for us, second we need to keep JJJ in the playing mix, I would hate to see a kid like this transfer because of lack of playing time. Seriously would we want to lose 3 more years of JJJ  because we are giving unwarranted playing time to various others?

JJJ's play has not warranted more.  Jake isn't keeping JJJ on the bench, JJJ's play is.

He is shooting .469 percent from the field... Identical to Deonte Burton whom everyone is swooning over. For a freshman wing that is a pretty impressive number.

It's obviously not his offensive production that's a concern.

Deonte Burton's defense is just as bad if not worse, but for some reason it appears Buzz gives him a pass.

We were already informed by a board insider that JJJ has already told Buzz he is transferring after this season.

First, you don't give people undeserved minutes in hopes they don't transfer.

Second, JJJ may be shooting that well, but it has been generated by an large against the weak part of the schedule.

Jake is shooting .347 percent from the field this year and clearly didn't have his shot working against Seton Hall, as he didn't make a fg in 30 minutes if action. I'm not putting Jake down...he has exceeded my expectations this year, although they weren't very high, and played admirably for the most part. However, his performance against SH didn't warrant 30 minutes of playing time and I think JJJ should have had a couple more of his minutes.

Deonte's problem is awareness. As an on-ball defender he's far better, mainly due to his size.

Dreadman24.  I believe that Jesmu84 may well have used teal for his post, if he thought it necessary.  Not because Dreadman24 didn't say it, but...
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

JJJ hasn't done squat against decent teams all year with the exception of some moments v. ASU.  (A pace that fits his game better.)  And he doesn't help his case when he comes in and throws up a three early in the shot clock.

He looks like he is thinking too much and the pace is a little fast for him right now.  You don't give him minutes simply to give him minutes.  For all of his limitations, Jake plays hard and well even if he isn't shooting well.  Since JJJ hasn't shown any evidence that he can shoot it any better against top competition, Buzz is going to side with experience and a player he trusts.

OMG, we've become George Washington's bad loss.

He hasn't had much of an opportunity against decent teams...i think he looks like he's thinking too much because of Buzz's no rhyme or reason rotations. He comes in for 2 minutes and doesn't see the floor again...has to be extremely frustrating and unnerving for a young guy to play with those rotations.

Before the season Buzz was on record that JJJ was the best of our freshmen. His play in practice and games has moved him down the list. I'm sure (like many talented freshmen at many D1 schools) that he's "frustrated and unnerved". Solution? Play better.

  • We got this.
Deonte Burton's defense is just as bad if not worse, but for some reason it appears Buzz gives him a pass.

FWIW- Deonte is 13th in the BE with 1.29 steals per game.  I am certainly not one of those who get too worked up over stats and recognize there are better ways to assess production.  And before someone says it, I also recognize that there is far more to defense than steals.  Still, it seems to indicate that Deonte might be making things happen on D.

Another side note for the anti-Juan club:  Juan is 10th in the BE with 1.35 steals per game...despite playing fewer mpg than any player in the entire top 40 than any player except...Deonte!  As a matter of fact, Deonte and Juan are #2 and #3 in the BE in steals per 40 minutes.  Again, I recognize that stats and steals are far from the only measure of defense...but Buzz seems to like stats, and these are pretty striking.

Bottom line is that both Deonte and Juan get us extra possessions - something that our offense desperately needs.

I'm sure he's frustrated, but to say he hasn't had much opportunity against decent team is false.  I would include our conference games, all our losses, and the win v. GW as decent opponents.  He had two DNPs.  (DePaul and Ohio State).  That means he has played 8 games against decent opponents.

In those 8 games he has played a total of 93 minutes.  Plenty of time.

In those 93 minutes he has scored 13 points...9 against ASU.  8 rebounds.  8 assists.  Shooting about 35%.  11% from 3.  Just not a lot there.

Jake's rebounding, defense, and hustle were still working, even if the shot wasn't. And he was taking good shots. He had a positive +/- for the game. JJJ did get into the game, but he ruined his chances by launching an ill advised three 5 seconds into a possession. I'd pull him too if I were Buzz

+1  Todd, Jake and Jamil played like solid upperclassmen on Saturday executing the game plan and understanding their role.  Each deserves 30+ minutes every game in a lineup that includes DG and DWil.

Few things hurt a team as much as forcing something that isn't there.  JJJ's 3-pt launch early in the shot clock was a Frosh mistake.  So was Deonte's ill-advised backcourt foul after frustration got the best of him following a missed shot.  They'll both continue to learn and grow from these experiences.

It must be unbelievably frustrating for Frosh.  In HS they could just decide to dominate.  Here they must learn patience.  The quicker that comes the more effective they'll be.

Really? How many have those minutes have been in minute intervals? Sultan, I respect your knowledge and insight but if your going to pull out stats your being hypocritical with your fascination of D Wilson then. He has had more than enough time to distinguish himself and has drowned at the D1 level.

Again, as I have explained in another thread, people are completely devaluing Derrick Wilson.

But even then, unless JJJ can play point guard, comparing one to another makes no sense.  MU has plenty of alternatives to JJJ...they don't have many good ones for Derrick.
