Deonte Burton: Breaking out of his freshman shell

You wouldn’t know it from the way he plays, but Deonte Burton is shy. The soft-spoken 19-year-old nervously laughs when asked about his thunderous dunk against Samford (“I just jumped”). Ask him about the role Buzz Williams wants him to play and you’ll get an automated, one-sentence response about working as hard as he can [...]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=10165&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

Deonte is averaging 18.3 mpg over the last 8 games.   Because he has earned them, is versatile, is figuring out his defensive responsibilities, is letting himself be coached and is showing a high motor every day.    Any questions?

Anyone keep track of many times he's passed the ball so far?  I'm guessing twice, but I only recall one time  :D

I can think of 3.   Seriously, though, IMO, a case can be made for him to replace Juan in the starting line-up, though I would prefer JJJ or Todd.

10 Assists in 220 minutes over 15 games?   What's the problem?    ::)

Is this referring to the DePaul starting lineup or the usual lineup of D Wilson, J Wilson, Otule, Thomas and Anderson?

Deonte certainly does like to shoot....

IMO, the person who needs to be replaced in the starting line-up is Juan.   My order of preference to replace him would be 1. Todd  2.  JJJ  3. Deonte.  I like Juan.   I thought he was going to break through and he has shown glimpses.   His defense is really good.  MU is going to count on him next year.   He hasn't consistently shown aggressiveness on offense.   I want another starter who can get his shot, who can make the defense move and react.   I like Derrick's ball-handling and Jake's defense and 3 pt threat.   So, put Todd/JJJ/Deonte in, get better ball movement, get somebody attacking the basket, create open shots for Jake, driving angles for Jamil, and leave more space for entry passes to Oxtule.    At least, that's how it works in my head.    ;)

He's actually a pretty good passer.  Sure, he is a scorer, but I recall a number of nice plays he created for others as well.
