Fox Offering FS1 Advertisers Make Goods, Including Possible Super Bowl Pregame Slot

Published November 7, 2013

Fox Sports has been offering make goods "in some high-profile sports events" on Fox "as it looks to compensate" for FS1 ratings shortfalls, according to Jeanine Poggi of AD AGE. Some FS1 advertisers said that they are being "offered time in Fox broadcasts such as college football games and pre-game and post-game NFL programming." Some advertisers "even received time in the World Series on Fox." If FS1 "continues to under-deliver, some buyers suspect very early pre-game inventory on Super Bowl Sunday could be made available." A source said that all regularly-scheduled World Series units "were sold, and what was offered to FS1 advertisers were extra units that arose as games unfolded." An ad buyer said that Fox Sports by offering such high-end inventory to make up for shortfalls is "showing its commitment to [FS1] and keeping advertisers happy" (ADAGE.com)

Good for them, great to hear as a Marquette fan!

Hopefully their ratings start to go up as their premium products (Big12 Football & BEast bball) are starting to be broadcast.

Big 12, Pac-12 & Conf. USA football has been on all year. Problem is they don't get the top pick for games.

Will help tonight with #10 Oklahoma at #6 Baylor on FS1 at 6:30pm.

Better teams are playing in the college game.

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

Agreed, But fantasy football squads don't depend on either college game.

Wait, why is this a good thing?  Having to give make-goods means you are severely underestimating the audience you deliver ads to.  That means FS1 is not doing well.

My thought exactly.

It's not in one respect...ratings not good = make goods.  On the other hand, if you buy into the last sentence that this is somehow a reflection on their commitment to the channel, one could come to a conclusion that tilted that way.

At the end of the day, Fox has to deliver the ratings for which the advertiser paid for.  If they aren't there, then they have to make them whole.  So I'm not sure I buy that last line as they would have to do it anyway, but if it helps them continue to get advertisers there then go for it.

Right, if Fox was shortsighted they could just give advertisers a big FU...but they are obviously recognizing this is going to be a long process and don't want to alienate their advertisers. I.e., they are in it for the long haul

Does this news mean we get to go back to ESPN?

Yes, please.

Doubtful BE basketball does much for their ratings. Ever see MU ratings from ESPN over the years? We are a blip. Fox bought content with BE, not ratings. They need content for the channel. Can't air color bars.

MU had some solid numbers last year. Most had ratings under a point. Big Ten had the best ratings.

Watching the BC Providence game. Listening to Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery call a game is thing of beauty. FS1 will do fine.
