I'll consider Todd's year a success when he completes this semester's courses and enrolls in the summer session.  My sincere hope is that he'll make significant progress toward his degree prior to next season.  Basketball will take care of itself over time.

The only thing I'll add is that he is still a relatively young player (only a soph.), so I think there is still reason(s) for optimism. With experience and maturity, Todd should be able to avoid some of his previous dips in performance. The physical ability appears to be there, but it's taking him a little time to put it together. 

At this point, I don't think scoring is a problem, but efficiency is.

First, Mayo did himself no favors and had to sit out the first semester because of it.

Then, Buzz did Mayo no favors with the short leash. To be sure, the shortness of the leash often was deserved, but the result couldn't have been surprising to Buzz or anybody else. It happens often in basketball: A guy who knows he's on a short leash finally gets into a game and knows he only has a minute or two to prove himself. So he hoists a quick shot. If it goes in, he buys himself more time. If it misses, he's right back on the bench. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Again, Mayo brought about his own woes. And frankly, if I were coach, I'm not sure I would have handled his situation any differently than Buzz did. Just expounding on the facts mentioned in this good article.

A Tale of Two Todds

• When Todd got off the bus after a not so great personal  performance at the SJU clincher, he was by himself with a growled face and just made a beeline into the Al.
• When MU beat Miami and he didn't play due to a "sprained ankle", he was the first one up off the bench cheering on his teammates with a big smile on his face

The kid is growing up, figuring it out, a bit of a moody hermit--hell, the rational brain doesn't fully form until a person is past 22.   But, it would have been easy for him to walk away numerous times....and you can say he actually did.  Buzz was committed to his mom, though, to provide the tough love to get him <as was said at the time> a MARQUETTE degree.  Kudos.

Todd put himself behind the 8 ball. He earned his short leash and I think he panicked a little trying to lose it. In the end he looked like he totally lost confidence. I think he's VERY talented, but there's more to this game than talent, especially at these levels. My biggest hope is he keeps his head together off the court. If he gets his game back that's gravy.

I didn't watch the Syracuse game until this past weekend because I was working and away, but the one thing I noticed is that our one good offensive run came with Mayo on the floor.  He spread the defense and got the ball to the high post with good passes out of ball fakes, an art he alone on our roster seems to have mastered.  He made some ll-advised plays late in the first half, but I would have liked to see more of him in the second half.  I agree with the general feeling about his inconsistent play, but I remain convinced that he is a good high D-I player.  I am starting to think, however, that he's never going to see the consistent minutes he will need to prove it.

Give Todd an entire summer and a full year as a member of the team, and he'll be just fine.  That being said, I have never been convinced that he is "starter level" talent at this level.  For instance, I think Juan has a higher upside than Todd does.

Agree 100% with this, Skinky. The unabashed, wishful-thinking love for Todd before this season was way over the top.

I was surprised that Todd's defense on Kilpatrick in the Cincinnati game wasn't mentioned.  Without the job he did, that game wouldn't have been an easy win for Cincinnati.
