Mitty hoops star Chiverton commits to St. Mary's
By David Kiefer (Mercury News)

Archbishop Mitty senior Collin Chiverton committed to St. Mary's College on Monday, becoming the second Monarch to earn an NCAA Division I basketball scholarship.

Chiverton, a 6-foot-5 guard, combined an explosive drive to the basket with a feathery outside shot. His versatility and size on the perimeter made him a dynamic player in Mitty's drive to the state Division II championship game, which the Monarchs lost in overtime to Mater Dei of Santa Ana, 69-64.

St. Mary's, which tied for third in the West Coast Conference last season, was Chiverton's choice on final list that also included Nevada, Portland, and UC-Santa Barbara.

"Coach (Randy) Bennett and St. Mary's were just a really good fit and offer a chance for Collin to really develop as a player and person," Mitty Coach Brian Eagleson said in an e-mail. "I couldn't be more excited for him. He and his mom just felt really at home there."

Chiverton averaged 14.0 points last season, shooting 44 percent from the field, 35 percent from the free-throw line and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line, during a season in which he earned All-Central Coast Section first-team honors.

Chiverton will join teammate Drew Gordon in the Division I ranks. Gordon, a center, already has committed to UCLA

With all due respect to this kid and to St. Mary's, if that's where he accepted a scholarship it seems unlikely he was getting a "hard look" from Marquette. Good luck to him at St. Mary's.
