Big Ten COY
« on: March 12, 2013, 10:50:07 AM »
How in the world is Bo Ryan the COY?  Now before you say well he had less talent and got to an unexpected 4th place finish...um who recruited that team?  He's the GM!  TC should be your COY.  He won the league, built a top 3 team.  Or Thad or John B or Izzo.  But Bo?

Certainly Coach Crean aspires to a higher mountain than Big Ten COY.

I would absolutely give it to Crean. That said, he did have the preseason #1, so it was somewhat expected. When you look at where Wisconsin finished considering what most people's opinion of that team was at the New Year (bubble at best) what Bo did was really impressive. I don't begrudge him the award, even though he wouldn't have been my first choice.

Recruiting is SO important in college basketball (a my hero Mike Deane, can attest).  Why we penalize coaches who build a great team?

Think it all depends on your definition of "Coach". Does your definition strictly mean coaching in the preparation, strategy, development, in-game, etc sense? Or does it mean coach in the leader of the program definition - marketing, in-game, practice, recruiting, development, graduation success, etc. sense?

Don't the other coaches in the league vote for this award? Maybe they all don't like Crean after the handshakes, arguments, etc. and wanted someone they actually respect to win.

Easy Chicos I said maybe.

No problem.  Actually, I opined on this yesterday.  They don't like Crean, nor should they.  Nor does the media.  Doesn't surprise me at all and he gets what he deserves.  These awards are partly about politics like so many things in life.  I thought Bo would get it and the result didn't surprise me.  I thought Buzz would get the Big Est COY, a little surprised he didn't but I suspect there may be some politics there as well.

On his weekly show, Buzz said the COY is political.  He said he didn't expect to ever win it, because he isn't political.  I believe he also said he was fine with that.

Such a nice change from previous management. Refreshing.
