From the Sports Business Journal.  As noted, not every distributor is required to carry the channel and because it has changed from MotorSports to MultiSports, it does trigger an out clause.  I'm guessing most will carry the channel, but you never know.

Chicos, can you explain the Regis thing? I'm excited about FS1's prospects for success—but I really don't understand why they have an 81-year-old man anchoring a sports talk show.

How does this make any sense?

So when does DirecTV's contract come up?

Proprietary...can't tell you.   ;)  The article is accurate to say it's more than a few years so we will be carrying the channel under the current terms for Speed, Fuel, etc.

Beats me.  It's a risk, like all programming.  70% of scripted programs by the big four are produced, shot and never make it to the air.  Those that do, many are toast within 4 weeks.  People remember the programs that succeed, but most programs don't. This is a little different in this case because it isn't a scripted program, but merely a talk show kind of thing.  Though the history of dead talk shows is a mile long as well.  I'm sure they did focus groups and all kinds of market research into the viability.  It doesn't appeal to me either.

I don't think even Regis knows why.

Chicos ...

What is your best guess ... Does FS1 initially make money, lose money, lose a lot of money?

Define initially?

I'd say they lose their shorts for 3 years, but totally a guess without seeing exactly what their COGS are.

EDIT:  Here's my former boss saying 2.5 years.  That might be Hill just being Hill.

Fox Sports 1 will use the same model they used for the Fox News start up.  Practically give access to the channel away to cable and satellite companies, develop audience numbers over the years and when the contract comes up for renewal they will have numbers to sell.  It worked big time for Fox News.  The company has deep enough pockets to make that approach work and a track record of how it's done.

The Good news for the New Big East is marketing will be through the roof.

The Regis thing is throwing a recongizable name out there.  If they told the media -- Rich Fox was going to have a show you all would say who  ::)

This will work for Marquette if the administration plays it smart.

Well LW should be Regis' first guest.
