Red Shirt -- Is It An Option?

So we're oversigned by 1 next year assuming Jake Thomas goes off scholarship and O'Tule comes back, correct? What are the rules regarding red shirting a player? Could Ferguson red shirt or one of the incoming Freshman? Or do you need a very specific reason? I can't remember the last MU player who red shirted other than for a medical reason, but is that the only time it's available?

Red shirting doesn't take care of the over signing problem, it just preserves eligibility.

How's a team like Syracuse for example have a 2012/13 roster with 15 players and MU with 13 not have this oversigning issue? I noticed this last year too when they had a similar or greater # on the squad.

Simple, the guys on the end of the bench don't have schollies

Syracuse traditionally has about 10 walk ons each year.  They had several who were honored last week on their senior night.
