NCAA Tournament Ticket Question
« on: March 03, 2013, 10:40:54 AM »
If I buy the tickets through MU, do I only get tickets to the games Marquette is playing in? If they lose their first game, do I not get tickets to the 2nd day of the weekend? And how do they decide seat location? Thanks

Assuming that they do this the same as past year ...

NCAA ticket alotment to MU will include tickets for only the sessions in which they play.  So, for example, if they play in the morning session, you will not get tickets for the evening session (first day), and if they do not advance, you do not get tickets for the weekend session.

However, you must sign up to buy the tickets for the weekend session, which will not be charged if they do not advance.

As for seating, what you need to know is this:  ALL of the team alotment seats are FAR better than what you can get in advance.  The reason is that the NCAA with all of the alotments, has set aside lots of good seats foer the team, host institution, etc.  The "leftovers" are then sold to the public.  Even if you bought tickets long ago, they will be high and far away.  Having gone to games in the past with son, we picked a destination, bought tickets in advance, and found that the seats were  universally not as good as you could get through team alotment.

Also, there are almost always additional tickets available through secondary sites (not much markup most locations) for sessions that your team does not participate in.  Son goes to UW, I am MU alumni.  This year, we are hoping that either he or I will get in on school alotment and, even if not, hope to get good seats on secondary market.  We are not going through NCAA site again, as we have been disappointed with seats available even though we signed up first day of availability (seem to recall November purchase).

The NCAA school alotments that I recall seeing in bother Chicago and Pittsburgh (where we went last two years), had essentionally one block of seats in lower bowl (think of 1/4 of the side court, lower bowl, at Bradley Center), as well as approximately 5 rows in upper section.  Only a few teams had seats in the upper section, but I believe (do not know) that these seats were available but not sold by institutions.

Good luck

Thanks for the response. Where do I go to buy the secondary tickets for the non mu sessions?

If you are going with only 2-3 guys I would just scalp em.  My brother and I went to Cleveland 2 years ago and Louisville last year and got great tickets (Lower bowl) for less than face value...

How do they determine where you sit in the marquette section? This is my first year being a season ticket holder.

It is done via priority points for season ticket holders.  But do understand that significant donors are 'taken care of'.

Not true. Last year in Phoenix you were charged for both sessions regardless of who won. We ended up selling our pair for 50 bucks to UL fans after we lost to Florida.

Not true. Last year in Phoenix you were charged for both sessions regardless of who won. We ended up selling our pair for 50 bucks to UL fans after we lost to Florida.

For the first weekend (2nd/3rd rounds), you only get tickets to the sessions your team is in. if MU wins their first game, you automatically buy (no option) to the Sat/Sun doubleheader.  If MU loses their first game (ala Washington in San Jose), you do not get tickets to the Sat/Sun doubleheader and are on your own for seats if you stay.

Also for 2nd round, if MU plays in the afternoon doubleheader on Thursday, you do not get tix for the Thursday night doubleheader.  Only are buying your session's doubleheader.

For the sw16/e8, you receive tickets to both (no option) regardless of sw16 result.  You are buying the sweet 16 doubleheader AND the elite eight game on Sat/Sun.  The reason being is that there is only 1 game and all fours schools are necessary to guarantee seats are filled.  If MU loses in sw16 like last two years and you decide to leave town, you will need to sell your seats for elite eight game.

This is all standardized by the NCAA and is mandatory by all schools.  These policies are not unique to Marquette.

Sorry - I was unclear.  The post about Regionals is absolutely correct.  That is, for first weekend (second and third round), you get only the sessions your team plays; regionals you need to buy them all.  I am sorry about the confusion.  I was addressing only the second/third round (first weekend) of NCAA, as I thought that was the question.

I suspect that the reason is that NCAA allots space, and for the first weekend, there are 8 teams, each with a section.  But for the games, there are four sections reserved for fans (that is, two teams, two games).  For the weekend game, they still reserve four sections for the teams, but they do not know who they will be (hence, you do not get tickets if your team plays).

For the regionals, there are also four sections reserved in advance, as all the games are played in one "session" on a thursday or friday.  For the weekend, the same four sections are available, but are sold in advance to the teams participating.

In any event ... sorry for the confusion.
