He figured since he was already getting paid by Stu here in the States, he would try his craft overseas.

Agee's father was shot and killed on the streets. The same thing happened to Gates' older brother. Gates' older brother was a hooper in his day and wanted to go to Marquette but didn't have the grades. He scored something like a 6 on his ACT.

I think what St J's did to the Agee's was terrible. Made me ashamed to be a Christian (I am C of E.)
