We want the Bucks to be wildly successful for the health of the BC and Milwaukee.  Is there a specific trade that can help with our recruiting efforts?  Bucks and MU need to scratch each others backs.

I do think having the Bucks in Milwaukee is a plus for MU.

No. I can't recall a single instance where a recruit decided to play for a certain college because of a player on the local NBA team.

Honestly, I don't know what either can do to help the other facilitate success. The answer is probably nothing.

Getting OJ Mayo would probs help keep Mayo from transferring.

This is true but would we have even been in the running for Embiid if the Bucks did not exist?

Impossible to quantify ... how many recruits are impressed to play in an NBA arena?  Not many schools play every game in an NBA arena.  (I believe MU, Memphis and Georgetown are the only ones ... correct me here).  Isn't the AL the practice facility for visiting NBA teams? I know the Bulls and Knicks practiced in the AL in the last year, what about the rest of the teams?  I wonder if a recruit visit was specially timed to bump into Dwayne Wade, Lebron, Derek Rose (etc) in the halls of the Al???

Finally, when I was at MU (see my handle) I thought I heard way back when that Al (the person not the facility) had the team scrimmage with the Bucks and this so incensed schools like UNC that they forced through an NCAA rule to bar college teams from scrimmaging with NBA teams.

C'mon 84, read the post... I said "player", not "team". And, yes, Embiid could have been the example, but even with the Bucks connection, he chose to go elsewhere.

I do agree though, that having the Bucks in Milwaukee is a benefit for MU.

Jury is out on this.  Plenty of fantastic programs that don't share a NBA team in the same city.  Just as there are plenty of schools that share an NBA city that aren't very good either, at least not historically.  It may benefit us, it may also benefit us if they leave.  Arguments can be made for both sides.

My question would be will the Bucks ever be good again.  By that I mean top level good.  I have a tough time seeing it with the way players want to play in certain cities, a cap that can be violated, etc.

AirPunches

I think any player who has a connection to any of the coaches would be a positive. Like when the Pistons were in town and Chew met with Kim English and Duane Wilson at the same time at halftime. I don't think any one trade really makes that big of a difference though. Having an NBA team in town and playing in an NBA arena is a nice recruiting pitch, so that's mainly why I am pulling for the Bucks to stay.

I think Todd's desire to be a "student" athlete plays much more into a potential decision to stay or leave MU than if his brother joins the Bucks.

The only way it happens is if they hit the jackpot in the draft lottery—and grab a superstar who is content to live and play in a small market. Kevin Durrant is happy in OKC (as unbelievable as that is). Milwaukee needs the same thing.

Garnett loves Boston ... (Boston 620k, Milwaukee 600k).  Why is Milwaukee a small market but not Boston?

Seriously, see the Green Bay Packers ... Win and players line up to play on the frozen tundra.  If OKC sucked I'll bet Durant would think otherwise.

You're really going to compare Boston and Milwaukee?

The Bucks will never be good with Kohl as owner, he does not care as long as be gets his tax write off. Of course the new owner could move the team away so... Take the good with the bad?

I forgot ... Milwaukee has an inferiority complex, Boston does not.

Wow, it's called a market for a reason. Milwaukee metro 1.6 million - Boston 7.6 million.

TV market.

Boston #7....Milwaukee #34.

Another example.

Twin Cities #15...population of Minneapolis is 383,000.  Small market?

To be fair to say "twin cities" you'll have to include St. Paul's 300K people. But yeah, silly post. And KG is an idiot.

The differences there are Boston is one of the two premier organizations in NBA history.  On the NFL side, it's a hard cap that can't be easily bypassed like the NBA cap can.  If you want to go over the NBA cap, you can and you pay a luxury tax.  That doesn't exist in the NFL.  Plus, the Packers are also one of the 4 or 5 teams in history that are great, so people want to play there.  Not sure many hoops players want to play in the NBA, Charlotte, Sacramento, etc.

Anybody that thinks for a small nonfootball school to play in a nba city and a nba arena does not help in recruiting has no idea what he is talking about.  These are 17 year old kids,  showing Lebron and wade dunk in the same arena you can matters.   are u telling me that creighton or Xavier would not want an nba to share an arena with them?

That may be true, but then how would it explain all those great future NBA players that go to schools that aren't part of NBA towns and do just fine.  Towns like Louisville, Bloomington, Lawrence, Spokane, Omaha, Cincinnati, Chapel Hill, Durham, Gainesville, etc.   Or conversely, the programs in towns with NBA teams, but normally aren't very good.

At the end of the day, if you have it you probably use it and market it as a positive.  If you don't have it then you can do just fine without it and succeed at the very highest levels.

I think KO used it as a selling point with Gates in Hoops Dreams. Does it impress me, a jaded aging fighter pilot. No. Does it impress a 17 y/o with stars in his eyes and a dream in his heart with a whole life ahead of him? I'm sure it does.

I visited Wrigley with some Japanese colleagues when the Cubs were on the road. The Japanese really wanted to walk out on the field. I was able to talk the dude into letting us through the little gate in the box seats. These guys ran the base paths, stood on the mound, and took turns in the batter's box. Nothing was chalked but they each stood there, imaginary bat in hand, and were facing down Fergie Jenkins or Charlie Root. And each, in his mind, planted the ball over the wall in center field.  They talked about it for years.

In think the Bucks, the BC, NBA teams working out at the Al are huge force multipliers for Marquette. Those who don't agree forget the dreams of youth.
