Not sure who saw the end of the DePaul/St. Johns game last night but at the end of regulation there was a foul called at the buzzer.  After review, they waved off the foul as being committed after the clock ended and the game went to OT.
It made me think of the argument of whether refs should call last second possessions identical to how they call the rest of the game, or be more lenient of fouls so as not to have the game be decided at the free throw line.  I've heard both sides.... but what say you scoop???

Skatastrophy

That's a tough situation.  My opinion is that they should call flagrant fouls and let the touch fouls slide.

They need to change the rules to make all intentional fouls into 2 shots + the ball.  End of game scenarios involving fouls really sucks.

Dr. Blackheart

They should have called backcourt first.  St. John's lost the dribble and DePaul never touched it.

Call last second possessions identical to how they call the rest of the game.  If it should be different, then put it in the rule book.  Asking referees to make a call on not only was it a foul, but also was it a bad enough foul for the end of the game, makes the refereeing more idiosyncratic which is not something that you want to bring into the game.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

You absolutely have to train the refs that way.  I'm not sure you could get away with doing anything else, but historically, that hasn't been how it's been called.   Of course they are making all of these calls in a split second, but in that split second, they may decide to hold their whistle if it's going to be something that's very controversial.   It's a completely arbitrary number, but I feel like the likelihood of getting a call on something like body contact at say, 15 minutes to go in the game is about twice as likely as with 15 seconds to go in the game.

Absolutely.  The rules don't say anything about whether something is a foul depending on when in the game it happens.  It takes some balls to make those calls though, as shown in the Pitt-Butler tournament game from 2011.
