OT: MU creating small pedestrian mall

I've heard a rumor that MU is considering purchasing the Catholic Knights building and turning it into dorms.  Carpenter and Cobeen would subsequently be torn down.  I have no idea if there is anything remotely true about this though.

I have also heard that the catholic knights building has been bought by MU.  However, I think they are planning on using the building for graduate/upperclass university owned apartments instead of dorms to replace what was lost by converting Abbotsford into a freshman dorm.  I can't imagine why they would take down Cobeen or Carpenter if they are going through the trouble of rerouting 11th street around tower and creating a pedestrial mall.  Plus, there are no plans for any new academic buildings so I'm sure those two buildings will be there for awhile.

This is a good move.   The two years I lived in Tower, if the cars coming off of the highway had a green light at Wells, they would still be flying as they went between the dorms.   Had to dodge quite a few times.   I wonder how the view of the construction is from good old 912?

very doubtful unless the previous owner of the Catholic Knights building passed away.  He would never sell to Marquette.  If that was the case though, McCormick, Carpenter, and Cobeen could be torn down, that place is fricken huge.

Actually... there are plans for a lot of new academic building. The engineers are getting a new building at some point where South Hall used to be. The law school is getting a new building over on Torry Hill and there are talks about finding funding to redo he Science buildings... believe me they need it.

It would actually be on the SW corner of 16th and Wisconsin, the engineering building that is. And yes, the science buildings definitely need it, they are in far worse condition than my high school's lab.

I should have said that there weren't any new buildings being planned aside from the law school and engineering building....my bad.  They actually received a donation a year or two ago to redo all the labs in the chemistry building so as far as I know atleast that part of the building is in reasonably good condition.  Not sure how willing they would be to build a new chemistry building if they just invested the money to renovate but the physics building needs so SERIOUS attention.  That was my least favorite building to take classes in, its like walking back into the '60's.

I guess MU bought out the apartment building that surrounds Heggarty's also...should be interesting to see what they do with that.

I miss "The Maze" - that is, the connection of the Health Sciences building to the Dentistry building! Anyone ever "exit" one adjoining building to take the stairs to the other connected building?

Second that motion for a new Life Science building. I think it has probably been the only constant on MU's campus other than the Joan of Arc Chapel!!!

This is great news.  It really makes me proud as an alum to see the positive changes that are occuring to the physical features of the campus.

The changes that occurred between my freshman year in 1999-2000 and my senior year in 2002-03 are like night and day.  I love how every time I go back to visit Marquette it appears that something new is under construction, or other tweaks and improvements are going on.  I also like that when I bring friends who went to traditional campus schools to Marquette they are very impressed with the campus.

There are too many other great things going on at that school. I understand people feel passionate about the name, but it just doesn't make the priority list for me.

The school is definitely better then it was 10 years ago... and quite honestly, the school might be at its all time peak. Newer buildings, solid campus design and plan for the future, high applications, full enrollment, upgraded housing surrounding campus, lower crime rates, donations are high, hoops program is very good. All of these things increase MU's value to the community and it's ability to raise it's academic reputation (ie attract top professors and students).

I couldn't agree with you anymore about all that you have said above.  Looking back to when I was making my college decision a little over three years ago now, I couldn't be happier with the choice I have made.  What I liken MU to right now is a stock that has experienced great growth over the past couple years while the other schools I was looking at have generally remained stagnaint (SLU and DePaul).  The school is certainly getting harder to get into and is becoming more well known, which is a great thing for us current students and you alums.  I couldn't be happier with the decision I made.

My sister in law lives there....the pool on top of the CK building is just effing awesome, it was a great pit stop between partying at Summerfest and then heading out to the bars.

Actually, it wont, there are going to be pnuematic columns at the end of the sidewalk and ppl will be able to pull up and drop off ppl on the sidewalk, the courtyard will be done by the time freshman move in.
