Marquette should really look into expanding their women's sports. If Marquette could add women's bowling (5 scholarships), field hockey (12), rowing (20), rugby (12), sand volleyball (6), softball (12), fencing (5), and swimming and diving (14), it would really raise the profile of the university. Sure, the scholarship cost would be immense, but wouldn't it be worth it?

My conservative estimate of a Marquette full scholarship is probably low at $50,000 each, but for those 86 scholarships it would cost a mere $4,300,000 in extra donations per year. And most of these we have facilities for. Rugby and field hockey can use Valley Fields. The bowling team can play at the Annex. The rowing team can practice in the Milwaukee River while the sand volleyball team can use the courts at Bradford Beach.

There would be some costs for the other sports. We would need an Olympic size pool for the swimming team, and somewhere for softball to practice and play, but at least fencing seems like a sport you can do anywhere.

And for anyone not counting, this is also coincidentally enough scholarships to offset a Division I-A football team! Once we add these 8 women's sports, we can really become a D1 force. Then all we need is a land grant, a football stadium, and another $4,250,000 in annual scholarship dollars raised through your donations.

Oh...and for anyone too clueless to realize it, the teal indicates that football at Marquette is A STUPID IDEA THAT WILL NEVER EVER HAPPEN!!! The logistics are un-freaking-real. You are conservatively talking about around $150,000,000 in start-up money when you factor in all the Title IX sports that need to be created to offset football, then around another $10,000,000 annually to cover scholarships and coaching staffs for the new programs. So unless any Scooper PERSONALLY has 400 MILLION dollars they want to donate to cover the start-up costs and scholarships for 25 years (because it would take at least that long to become relevant) can we please never discuss this absolute idiocy again?

I always wished Marquette would add baseball and softball.  Not football.

I think we need a fishing team.  ;D

Now this is an idea I think we can run with, maybe competitive eating and beer drinking also.  Those are sports people in WI can rally behind.

We could be trendsetters.

That would be dumb. Nobody cares about college baseball in the northern U.S.

Plenty of good programs that disagree.

I admittedly don't follow college baseball at all. Couldn't tell you anything about it.

But I do know UWM is the lone D-1 baseball program in the state, and nobody cares. Nobody goes to their games. Now, I understand there are major factors contributing to this (proximity of field to campus, conference, etc). But, they also play the first month of the season or whatever it is on the road, due to the crappy weather in Wisconsin in the spring.

Basically, lacrosse seems like a good addition. Seems like a fun sport that is gaining popularity that doesn't require good weather. I think baseball/softball would be a waste of effort and resources.

Tools like these guys are reason enough to never entertain the thought of having baseball as a Marquette sport.

Rugby and Field Hockey only get 12 scholarships, but rowing gets 20?  Would having 12 scholarship Women's Rugby players on campus hurt student recruitment?
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

$50,000 was the number Cottingham gave me 3 years ago as the cost to fund an athletic scholarship annually at Marquette. MU advancement gave a lower number, but I don't know if it translates to student-athletes.
