Marquette officials were concerned the game would be called off as early as Wednesday night, when dropping temperatures caused moisture to form all over the court. One member of the traveling party spent 40 minutes on the phone with Big East Conference officials Friday afternoon to reinforce the stance that the Golden Eagles would not play if it meant putting any of their players at risk.

Coach Buzz Williams said he was all for moving the game indoors to The Citadel's McAlister Field House, the rain alternative, as early as Wednesday when he learned of the court issues.

I blame Larry

That's really disappointing to here. It's one thing if it just came up today. There was ineptness, but you could also blame bad luck. If this is true (No reason to doubt it, just this is the first it's been mentioned), then it's really disappointing this wasn't taken into account. The most shocking thing to me is they had it ready to tip. I was at a bar and thought all systems were go until right before the tip. They could have still honored the troops indoors. The ship would have been awesome, but a big-time matchup indoors, in honor of the troops, is still pretty awesome.

Reading this article Matta's statement right after the game seems even more absurd. Right after they called it he said "Marquette player's had problems with the conditions" and didn't mention how his own players felt about that side of the court. What a fucking scumbag, trying to blame canceling what everyone believed would be a bad idea on MU.

TallTitan34

Hey Matta, if MU didn't want to play why were the MU players wiping the court up while you and your guys did nothing?

Pretty crazy video of how wet it was.

Given that the Georgetown - Florida game 170 miles away was cancelled at half time for the same reason, I doubt anyone's going to be blaming Marquette too much for this one.

MUChicagofan

I think people on here are giving Matta a hard time on this one.  I don't think in his interview he said anything disparaging towards MU's players.  The fact that Buzz was wiping the floor and he wasn't, well, Buzz is eccentric and that's his style, he would do something like that.  OSU's players stayed out there during that 20 minute delay and shot around while our guys were in the locker room, so maybe let's give Thad some credit on that.  I'm not an OSU troll or anything, this game was just an unfortunate situation and there was really no way anyone was going to look good.  With the Gtown vs. Fla game also being cancelled, I think we've seen the end of games on aircraft carriers.

brewcity77

I think we've seen the end of East Coast carrier games. The problem was the nighttime temperature drop. Play on the West Coast and the sun is up for 3 more hours, or play at 4:00 instead of 7:00 and you're fine.

Syracuse v San Diego St is also on a carrier on the west coast and was postponed until Sunday because both teams could fit it in 2 days later.

Not sure the location of east v west coast matters.

They also could of moved the game times up to avoid the moisture proble that was occuring at night. TV could of shown the games on tape delay, if they did not want to change their schedule. It would of inconvienced some of the fans, but they were inconvienced anyways when the game was cancelled.

MarquetteDano

Just wondering if there is some way you can have the court lightly heated from underneath to stop the moisture.

Is that possible and would it work?

tower912

As I understand it, the court was heated, which added to the condensation issues.

I don't post that much but it's a pet peeve so I'll say it: "could of" is not a phrase. It doesn't make sense (except that it sounds like "could've", a contraction for "could have"). So, it's either "could have" or "could've"...but never could of. Ok, that is all.

I'm annoyed. Thy should moved it inside, a real disservice to those who spent good money to fly out and attend the game. How does an event like this not go through a "walk through" the night before to determine elements. I think we would have beaten them.

I don't think Matta implied what you are saying.  He said afterwards that they could have gotten a few minutes in at most.

As I understand it, the court was heated, which added to the condensation issues.

If that was indeed the case (the court was heated), that would make sense as to why half of the court seemed fine and the problem was with the half closer to the water.  There was probably one heat system on each half of the court and the one closer to the water failed.

Heat would have been the court's best friend last night... a warm court (at least a few degrees above the dew point) would have resisted forming condensation as the temperature dropped last night.

The condensation issue is an easy one to solve... however, if it was the "spray" from the water (i.e. micro-droplets of condensation forming over the water and being carried by convections/wind to the court) that caused the one side of the court to stay moist, then that would have been a much more difficult to plan for and overcome.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.
