I talked to Tony Benford and T.J. Taylor about the guard's status this season.

The NCAA denied Taylor's appeal for immediate eligibility. If you have been following along, you know the story. Taylor signed with Oklahoma, left the school, spent a season at Paris JC and then signed with Marquette. Taylor left before ever playing and showed up at UNT.

Taylor will have a torn labrum in his shoulder taken care of while sitting out.

It's a tough break for UNT, but let's keep in mind that UNT is deep — really deep.

Chris Jones will be back at the point, where UNT also added P.J. Hardwick, who people are under-estimating — a lot. That guy can play, which is why he originally signed with an SEC school.

UNT still has Alzee Williams, who can slide back over to shooting guard now. And don't forget UNT also has Brandan Walton.

Bottom line, it's a tough break for UNT to not have Taylor this year, but UNT is really deep and talented and should be able to compensate.

Tony Mitchell is a lottery pick...pretty deep mid major.

NORTH TEXAS

Toughest: at Creighton (Nov. 9), NIT Season Tip-Off (Nov. 12-23), at Saint Louis (Dec. 5)
Next-toughest: Lehigh (Dec. 20)
The rest: Cameron (Nov. 16), Texas-Arlington (Nov. 28), Louisiana-Lafayette (Dec. 1), Jackson State (Dec. 8), Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 16)
Toughness scale (1-10): 9 -- Tony Mitchell could lead the Mean Green to a regional round upset of Kansas State in the NIT Season Tip-Off. And if that happens, a matchup with Virginia at MSG could happen, with Michigan or Pitt waiting in the wings. Even if the program stumbles, however, road trips to Creighton and Saint Louis , a pair of Top 25 squads, will boost its nonconference schedule in Tony Benford's first season as head coach. C.J. McCollum and Lehigh come to Denton five days before Christmas for a meaningful mid-major matchup. No complaints for this slate.

So, a question for JayBee or some of the other NCAA experts:  Does TJ only have two years left to play now since he was enrolled full-time at OU? He has no eligibility appeal left on the academics for this year, and that also kills him for a medical waiver for his shoulder.

The most important thing to understand about the five-year clock in NCAA Division I is that is starts once the student-athlete enrolls full-time at any collegiate educational institution [two-year or four-year institution]. Once the five-year clock starts, it does not stop.
