Could be a brilliant business move for Wade.

These may never be popular in America due to the well established brands holding almost all of the market share.

However, if he can be #1 in China, that would be huge.

We might see more and more moves like this as China is a huge marketplace and their buying power continues to climb.

Put it this way: Would you rather be the #1 shoe in the US, or the #1 shoe in China?

What does this mean for the Jordan brand at MU?

MU still has one year left on their Jordan Brand contract.  My hopes are that we can continue to maintain our relationship with the Jordan Brand, as that is what best markets to America (and what youths identify with).

Marquette is continually building on their unique brand (toughness, an eccentric coach that is a press conference dream, and cool/hip/different uniforms).

I agree that this move by Wade could be very beneficial to him - both financially and from a global brand awareness perspective, but I  struggle to see how MU could gain value from partnering with a Chinese company.

The only benefit for MU is $.

Capturing the Chinese market wouldn't do them any good brand-wise.

However, if they get a lot more $, it might be worth it. MU can always use more $.

Reminds me of a line from David Mamet's The Heist (I think): "Of course you want your money - everyone wants their money. Why do you think they call it money?"

Well, there is certainly equity in the Jordan brand, so I don't think MU would run to jump ship.

However, there are ways to approximate the monetary value of the Jordan/MU relationship, and if (insert brand) offers significant more value (in $ and branding), MU should take it.

With this said, I imagine Li Ning is going to concentrate on NBA before they invest significantly in college athletics, so I wouldn't expect an offer from them.

Someone mentioned a few days ago on twitter that MU is in talks with the Jordan brand on extending their contract. I don't see MU leaving for a while.
But I like to throw handfuls...
