MU Avenue

In men's soccer, No. 9/No. 7 Marquette (11-0-0) has just defeated No. 2/No. 2 Connecticut (10-1-1) at Valley Fields.

A nice win for MU, which has some outstanding players, including a terrific goalkeeper.

Makes you proud.

One of the few (maybe only?) Remaining undefeated in division 1 soccer this year. Impressive season they have so far. Anyone know if they've beaten a team this highly ranked? Our if they've ever been this highly ranked themselves?

They are the last high major with a perfect record (High Point is also unblemished). I don't think they have ever beaten a consensus top 2 team and I'm positive MU has never been in the top-10.

Just to get a scope of the feat they pulled off by scoring three times on the nation's best goalkeeper, he had never given up more than two. Also the fourth largest crowd at Valley Fields ever, making the win even sweeter.

Better hang a banner.

Extremely cool and very proud of Louis Bennett fighting forward and moving the program to a new level.

Keep this up and maybe we'll get that soccer stadium that Cottingham wanted.

I'm actually debating about attending a game.

Its awesome to see other MU sports have great success, this will only increase their popularity, as the sport never really had a following since the team was subpar in past years.

We were ranked as high as #9 during the 94 season as I recall.  If not, the 95 season.

When do new rankings come out for men's soccer?

So if Badger fans ask now our football team is doing, I guess we can say pretty damn good!

I see the lacrosse team also won its first two games. Good stuff.

Is MU undefeated when playing Uconn teams ranked #2?

jsglow

We attended the game as a family last night and strongly encourage all scoopers to check it out.  Some observations:

- the UConn goaltender was absolutely unbelievable and singlehandedly kept the Huskies in the game.  He had several unbelievable saves in the first 15 minutes of the second half.  Stuff you'd expect from a top end World Cup keeper.

- MU's midfield play was outstanding and we controlled the flow of the play for probably 70 of the 90 minutes.  It was no fluke that we won and absent the keeper mentioned above, would have easily scored 5-6 goals.  Only when MU packed the D in a bit too tight around the 70th minute did UConn mount an attack. If UConn is truly a national power, we're right there too.

- Nearly packed grandstand on a very cold night.  Of course Family Weekend had a lot to do with it but I'm confident all came away with a "That was fun; let's go again sometime" attitude.  The redevelopment of the Valley Fields about 3-4 years ago resulted in a very nice facility although a new grandstand is still a necessary investment.

Respectfully, why is this a big deal?  Don't follow soccer. Would like to know more.

Because it was #2 in the nation (UConn) against #7/9 (depending on the poll.)  MU is the last undefeated/untied D1 soccer program in the country.  Dare I say top #5 nationally next week?  That's pretty cool and worthy of a $5 dollar ticket.  Plus many of us spent our 40s watching our own kids play youth and HS soccer (I certainly did). So many of us have at least a passing familiarity with the game and strategy.

Cool.

Played the game too.  On my HS's first soccer team.

My favorite play from last night was a perfectly executed 'header' that took place at midfield right in front of the grandstand.  Not your typical forehead thunk, the MU midfielder skillfully allowed the ball to very slightly graze the side of his head and expertly diverted it past a nearby UConn defender right to the MU striker he was aiming it toward.  I don't believe it resulted in a goal but was still an amazing display of skill.  MU played with that level of skill all night.  It was a joy to watch.

So, you're confused why it's a "big deal" when marquette has a top 10 nationally ranked sports team and they beat the #2 ranked team? ...Really?

Just don't follow it.  It was a simple question.

MU is now good in soccer. Phase 1 of the plan to become SLU is complete.

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

That costume would have been toasty on Saturday.
