UCONN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: HS sophomore Courtney Ekmark commits to HuskiesPublished: Thursday, May 31, 2012

When Courtney Ekmark was at the U.S. Under-17 national team trials, the sweet-shooting sophomore guard from Phoenix said she wanted to make her college decision "sooner rather than later."

Ekmark did just that. After spending Memorial Day weekend talking it over with her parents, Ekmark became the first player from the high school class of 2014 to commit to UConn when she called Hall of Fame coach Geno Auriemma to give him the news Monday night.

"They have a tradition of winning and that is why I like them," Ekmark said. "I choose UConn because I really liked the coaching staff and the competitiveness. Also, I look forward to playing with the best players in the country and the fan support is also amazing."

Ekmark, who is also the No. 1 student in the sophomore class at St. Mary's in Phoenix, is coming off a spectacular sophomore season when she led St. Mary's to an undefeated season and the No. 1 ranking in the final national high school poll.

Her high school coach is also her father Curtis, a former player at Marquette.

"We had a good long talk," Curtis Ekmark said. "We wanted to make it a good life lesson for her in terms of how to make an important decision so we wanted to make sure established her priorities and then gather all the facts to analyze the decision.

"She's wanted to go there for a while. She was just waiting to pass it by and get the green light from her mom and I."

Don't remember that name at all, though the MU media guide does list Ekmark as a letter winner in 85 and 86.  Not listed on MU Wiki.  Obviously a walk-on...?

Edit:  OK, I see him the the 86-87 MU media guide, but I sure don't remember him though I do remember the name of feloow walk-on Jeff Couch.  Oh well, the Grey matter is getting older.
