Katz's latest ESPN column about Big East issues

Money quote: "Basketball can survive and flourish with Louisville, UConn, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Villanova, St. John's, Memphis and Temple anchoring the league."

I think Marquette should have been mentioned in that group since we are as good or better than at least half those teams pretty much every year.  Minor thing, but still annoying.

I can see what Katz is saying. MU is in a smaller market...and like it or not, MU's profile is not that big. I live in San Francisco, and every time I tell someone I went to MU...I get a blank stare back. That's just how it is.

MU82

I'm not normally a nitpicker but ...

Milwaukee is a bigger market than Memphis, Marquette has been a better program since Rose/Calipari left Memphis and Marquette has been a very solid Big East program for several years while Memphis has yet to play its first league game. Trying to digest how Memphis is more of a Big East "anchor" than Marquette is.

Folks...step away for one second and be honest with yourself about Marquette and their brand equity. The PERCEPTION among some is that we are still just like Xavier. We are not a tried-and-true Big East team known nationally. That tide is turning, but...for some (Katz), I'm sorry, we aren't in the same breath as Louisville or Memphis. We just aren't. Let's not kid ourselves. Sucks to read that sometimes, but it's true. I do think MU has gotten a TON of positive press/PR the last few years with our hoops success and people are starting to realize the school's a destination for great hoops talent. But...we aren't there yet. We are in fly-over country, Milwaukee. We aren't out on the east coast.

🏀

I'd be fine with it as Niv states...but...Temple...?

I'm cool with national perception of MU. I know we're not a household name all around the great U.S. of A. I have written on this board of the numerous times people have seen my Marquette sweatshirt and asked me if it's in Michigan. I don't expect average folk to be experts on college location.

I do, however, expect a national college basketball expert to know that Marquette has been a pretty solid program in the Big East. I am not routinely a Katz basher. I just think he dropped the ball here.

Make a couple Final Fours, or win a NC, and that changes. But right now we're at the back end of the second tier of teams. Not a bad place to be, but not to be confused with teams that have more marketable names or recent success. Like it or not, Wade may as well have been 20 years ago.

Yes, agreed.

Especially when he includes Temple as a staple

Philadelphia is in the heart of Big East geography.
Milwaukee is not.

As for Memphs, they have been to 4 Sweet 16s, 3 elite eights, and 1 final four since we joined the Big East, compared to our 2 Sweet 16s. You can argue that one of Memphis seasons was vacated--still the perception remains that they have been consistently stronger than we have based on 3 non-vacated Sweet 16s, two of them going on to the Elite Eight.

He's clearly edited the article since then.  It now says:

Proof that Andy Katz reads MUScoop!

TribalRage

It is silly to think Katz has an anti-MU agenda. The guy had a brain fart but corrected it.

Could it be that Katz's omission was simply due to the fact that he was writing as a fan?...of Marquette?  We have seen countless "unbiased" articles from journalists that turn out to be otherwise (usually in opposition to MU).  Maybe, in the back of his mind he was thinking...

[MU] Basketball can survive and flourish [playing along with teams like] Louisville, UConn, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Villanova, St. John's, Memphis and Temple anchoring the league.

Only to correct realize the oops, and correct it?

but then again, we need more antagonists.
