So my friend who lives in Phoenix came up to visit me this past weekend and has never heard of Marquette before.  She watched the first two games with me and instantly became a fan, making me take her to the spirit shop on campus and getting some gear so she could bring it back with her.

Well today she's wearing one of her shirts at work, and has told me the amount of compliments she has gotten has been "unreal"

"Yeah Go Marquette!"

"Marquette has a great team, and I've always liked there coach"

"Marquette wins it all this year"

"OMG I love the color of that shirt"

and then you get the one guy who says, "Yeah Marquette, did you go to school in that part of Indiana?"  <--- Huh?

All of these people are from Arizona and have no connection with Marquette as Alumni, so i was curious if anybody else had the pleasure of meeting people with the same persona?  I never thought Marquette was that recognized especially without going there. Who would have thought basketball can turn a school with about 8,000 undergrads into a nationally recognized name in which people like, and respect. Pretty neat if you ask me.

I am very thankful for the season these Warriors have brought to me/us, and only hope for continued success

Tons of transplants from the midwest in Phoenix.  That could explain some of it.

These people were born and raised in AZ.

I'm from Arizona originally and every time I visit and wear my Marquette stuff or people find out that I went there, they are surprisingly complementary. I'm sure that transplants have something to do with it, but there are more people than you would think that know Marquette and know that it's a good school. It's true that they're not very keen as to where Marquette is, but they do know the school.

That wasn't really my point.

Chances are you're more likely to be aware of MU if you're from the midwest than you are if you are born and raised somewhere else.  If you are around a lot of people from the midwest, like there are in Phoenix, your likelihood of knowing someone that has some familiarity with MU is probably higher than somewhere else.

I'm not diminishing the fact that college basketball games make people more familiar with a certain team.  But it's not a conicidence that the games between teams from Wisconsin/Chicago and teams from Phoenix draw very well down in Arizona.  There are a ton of snowbirds and transplants from the upper midwest that live there.  That's all I was saying.

No one was born and raised in PHX.
All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

Ahhh I understand. Makes sense.  I thought you were referring to the people as being from the Midwest.

Wifey is wearing MU @ work (in PHX) today, and it's funny. She gets comments all day long. I wear MU @ work every day, and usually hear nothing. Not just normal looking MU stuff...bright yellow stuff. I must scare people.  ;D

Comments addressed to me are usually about the UP, not about our wonderful institution and sports programs.

Off to the game in my bright yellow pullover...

GO MARQUETTE!
