To me, doesn't make much sense. Hopkins could turn out to be a great coach and keep Syracuse among the elite. But, I would think Syracuse could get almost anybody they wanted...so why take somebody with no head coaching experience? He'll keep the same principles in place, other than that, I'm not sure it's a great idea.

The guy has been there for 12 seasons.  How about paying him back for some loyalty to the school and the program?  I'm sure they are very familiar with him and will know if he will be a good coach or not.  They also know that he will be a good fit with the school.  Moreso than a guy that they interview for a few hours.  Also, recruits will know that there is some continuity to the program.  They won't worry what will happen if Boheim retires.

Assistant coaches do more than people give them credit.  Being a good game coach is overrated.  Most of your coaching should be done in practice.  I love this decision by Syracuse.
