Reactions from Marquette’s win over Connecticut

Written by: Mark Strotman

If Jae Crowder hadn't already done it before today, his 29-point, 12-rebound performance solidified him as a first team All-Big East member. Not only did he battle inside, holding Alex Oriakhi and Andre Drummond to a combined seven rebounds, he ... Continue reading →

Love the last paragraph about Mellow.  I only saw part of the game but I'm thrilled that his minute or two contribution was valuable.  Last week on Buzz' TV show, coach spoke highly of Mellow's understanding of the system.  I clearly remember him being lost last year and guys like Jimmy and Buycks positioning him on the court.  Another example of hard work and great attitude paying off.  Gonna enjoy cheering for him as an upperclassman leader the next 2 years even if it is out of the 7-10 slot on the team.

I was pretty impressed with Jamail's defensive effort in the limited time he was in.  I recall the sequence mentioned in the article clearly, and thinking to myself that Oriakhi was going to get a bucket.  After all, he's being guarded by a guy 4" shorter and a good 40-50 lbs lighter (at least).  JJ did a phenomenal job of defending him on that play...and I think he got stuck on Drummond on another play and did another great job of being active and denying easy position and entry pass.

Gotta love a kid that's not afraid to mix it up with someone who's that much bigger and who will work his tail off even though playing completely out of position.  Definition of "team-first" kind of player.
