All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

After Cincinnati's win, I considered for the first time Marquette being a "lock" under my definitions.

To be a lock, you have to be able to still make the tournament if you lose the remainder of your games. If Marquette goes into a tailspin and loses its last five, plus the Big East Tournament game, they are 21-11, 10-8 in conference.

In other words, they're in.

PGsHeroes32

Yup, just feels good seeing us as being safely in a month before the tourney.

Still gotta keep winning though obviously. Would really like a 3 seed.

TBW was never an ESPN thing, it was originated by Andy Glockner over at si.com. But that said...Glockner has also moved us into the "Locks" category ;D

Seth Davis (who many of us bashed early this season when he was one of the last to rank MU in the top 25) mentioned us twice in his weekly twitter Q&A.

"America's best kept secret. Love this team."

"Marquette, UNLV, Wichita St RT @jlilliemulligan: Who are your dark horses that could make a deep tourney run?"

FWIW, the other two programs have benefitted from MU transfers in the last decade: UNLV (Reggie Smith) and Wichita State (Karon Bradley).

What is the exact definition of "lock"?  I think it means we could lose every game the rest of the season and still make the tourney.

If I'm correct, then moving us to the lock column this week is correct.

I would, too, and that is a probable ceiling.  But I have to believe if we win out and make it to the BEAST championship game, we're a lock for a 2 seed.  And I don't think that scenario is as unrealistic as it sounds.

I do not know how they can say we are a lock. Lose our last 5 games and a first round Big East tournament game and we are anything but a lock. We would most likely lose the rest of our games if Crowder or Wilson got hurt in practice tomorrow. Realisitically we are in the field, but we are not a lock.

ESPN's Bubble Watch changed their "rules" this year. Lock used to mean that if you lost every game left, you'd still make the tourney, but this year they assume you won't. Look at IU, they are a lock but still need to win 3 out of their last 6 to not be sweating on selection sunday.

"In the past, we'd wait until it was almost statistically impossible for a team to miss the tournament before we'd confer status as a lock; this year, we'll be a little more lenient. Sure, Team X could lose every game the rest of the way, and thus could miss the tournament. Will it? No. You get the idea. (This won't matter much for another week or two, probably, but be advised all the same.)" - From the 1st Bubble Watch

21-10, 10-8 gets you in with ease this year. The bubble is horrendous.

Yeah I know it was but ESPN has been using it this year a lot in chats and on the bubble watch before we were locked in saying "MU is close to dropping the TBW name" or along those lines.

9-9 in the BEAST will get you into the tourney about 90% of the time.

South Florida will be part of that 10% this year.  USF is 8-4 and likely will finish around 10-8 and many people don't even have them on the bubble.  Wins against Rutgers, Saint John's, Villanova, DePaul, Pitt (especially early) & Providence this year don't impress anybody.  Need to get at least 4 wins from the other teams this season to be sure, I think.  We have our 4, but I think we need just one more win to 100% lock it up.  If we finished 10-8, 21-11 and on a 6 game losing streak that included a home loss to Rutgers and a Big East tourney loss to a low Big East seed, I know I wouldn't be 100% confident on Selection Sunday.  Not that that will happen, of course.

It is hard to over come a 7-6 non-conference record.
