Mr. Nocera posted a followup to his previous two op-ep pieces based on the press release from the NCAA.

I agree with karavotsos.  I think Novera is using this specific case to raise the profile of a growing number of people displeased with the way the NCAA runs things (with Jay Billas being the most well known of that camp).

My opinions on the exploitation of student athletes in money generating sports have change changed over the last couple years.  People are making millions of dollars off these kids, and Boatright is getting interrogated, embarrassed, and chastised over his mother potentially receiving a couple thousand dollars in benefits.  Remember that the NCAA controls the stream of money merely by existing.  It uses the vestige of amateurism to justify its place at the top and its large slice of the pie.  It has to run advertisements during network broadcasts to try to convince viewers that the status quo is great; student athletes go on to become doctors and lawyers, and fans get to cheer for their team.  The Boatright case demonstrates that reality is far from this rosy picture, particularly in revenue generating sports at large universities.

I don't trust the NY Times.

The NY Times is the paper of record in the US.  I don't trust Iranian state news.  I may disagree with the viewpoint of some NY Times op-ed pieces, but what is reported as fact in the NY Times is as close to fact as you will see in any paper throughout the world.  Discerning fact from opinion is what the Jesuits taught me.

It's not just the Times. Opinion creeps into hard news everywhere, even simple AP wire reports. I have no trouble discerning it for what it is, I just think it's crappy journalism.

GGGG

The two best newspapers in this country from a reporting point of view are the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.  And you couldn't get two papers that view things more differently from an Op/Ed point of view.

+1000

Unfortunately there are millions of people in this country that have terrible discerning powers.
