Derrick Wilson

Why didn't he play?  I didn't see any threads addressing it or anything in Edlund's blog.

Syracuse plays a zone.  He would have been a HUGE liability against Syracuse.

Buzz has shorted the rotation and quite frankly, his contributions lately have been sparse.

Remember, it was his hand-check foul and then bad turnover that got the Georgetown rally going.

He played five minutes against NOVA and had three turnovers
He played two minutes against Georgetown and had that huge turnover.
He played zero today.
Vander getting the backup time at PG.

He has I believe like six points all year.

For those saying he was heir apparent to the MU point guard position, things might have changed since BE play.  Maybe why the interest in Jamal Branch.

Really to be expected. I have a feeling we'll see less and less of him as the season goes on, based on Buzz's history with freshmen. Mayo has clearly proven he belongs in the rotation, and Juan has to play when we're short on bigs simply because we need the rebounding and length he can give in spurts.

Though what's worrisome is that Jamail isn't getting much more consistent minutes. 7 today, 1 against GT, DNP against Villanova...not a good sign that as a sophomore he isn't asserting himself into the lineup, especially as we move into conference play, where experience should be winning out.

Jamail has struggled offensively this year.  Not shooting well at all.  Today he missed a 3 and had a TO on an entry pass to him where he mishandled the ball.  Add to that, he is truly a liability on defense.  He get's some rebounds, but the other parts of his game are limiting his playing time.

Its definitely a bad sign... For the most part this season he has gotten minutes, but he hasn't done much with them. Clearly, Mayo has flown by him on the depth chart and I have a feeling that Anderson will as well.

Derrick Wilson would have done nothing today. Total liability against the type of defense Syracuse runs. It would have been like playing 4 on 5, which is virtually impossible against that zone.

Just not the game for him, unfortunately. Really hasn't shown me anything that would warrant any playing time at all this season. Junior needs more time and he needs to be more consistent. He played great in the second half today.

Jones was, I guess to be an answer to outside shooting as he was recognized in high school.

For the year he is shooting 36% and 3 for 17 from three (17%).  All in limited playing time, but not taking advantage of his minutes.

Wilson and Jones don't seem to be BE-caliber players. They're role players -- at best. If they transferred, so be it. We need to upgrade in spots anyway.

If Jones continues to struggle and his minutes are very limited, I think he has a big decision to make this spring.

He was a top 100 recruit, so there will be interest in him. If he decides to leave, he would get a season to sit out (work on his game) and then would have two seasons to finish out his college career. If he stays at MU, the probability is extremely high that he ends up completing his eligibility at MU... As most coaches don't take senior transfers, especially ones that have had limited production.

If he decides to go elsewhere, the end of this season would be natural transition point.

Can't see how JJ would want to sit two more years here when he could play regularly at a lower level. There is no part of his game that is BE caliber.

JJ is not going to see much time except garbage minutes.

This is why you keep recruitin'. There will be issues and transfers.

OK.  I wasn't sure if it were an injury or doghouse issue.  Which was really the question.

However, in the bulk of the comments here, there's a lot of "sky has fallen" on the kid, in much the same way Vander was bludgeoned last year.  Maybe to be expected after a disappointing loss.

Not Big-East caliber...  Recruiting over...  Can't do anything against a zone (and anyone else could in the first half?)...
I'm not saying he's the best point guard in the nation, not even close, but am holding out judgement of his abilities until he's had a fair chance to elevate his game to the competition.  I like that he's a hard playing freshman, a seemingly good desire to learn, has done a nice job of handling the position (against lesser opponents), plays good defense (prone to the occasional freshman mistake), and is a freshman.

Brewcity (singling out as it's notable) hit it right.
Really to be expected. I have a feeling we'll see less and less of him as the season goes on, based on Buzz's history with freshmen.

How is that "sky is falling" or "bludgeoning" the kid?  He has played in 15 games.  In those 15 games, he has taken 9 shots,  made 3 and has 14 assists.  Those are the facts.  Against the Cuse Zone, it would definitely be 4 on 5 offensively.  He is not a penetrator against a man defense, he would not be against a zone.  You asked a legitimate question, and to me, that is a legitimate answer.

I think what we're seeing out of Derrick is that he's playing his role that's been given to him by the staff.  Play tough D, distribute the ball, don't turn it over.  In my estimation, he's doing that pretty well.

He's not going to be a scorer this year because that's not his role.  Hard to tell if he's got that ability against this level of competition given he's played in so few games so far in his career.  I'll give Buzz and the staff the benefit of the doubt because, as the more astute posters on here always say, he sees them every day in practice and he knows what they can and can't do.

As always, the retard savants who have come to dominate this board already know he's not a Big East quality player after 15 games of his career.  Give me a break.   ::)

Agree.  Derrick plays hard and has shown to be a quality point guard.  Buzz wants hit to play defense and distribute the ball.  On Buzz's show, he said that Derrick is not a shooter and he doesn't want him to shoot.  It was surprising to hear a coach speak badly about a player.  I think Derrick will be a solid PG for MU and will score more when he feels that the team and coaches want him to.
