Rick Pitino said Tuesday that he won't coach past the 2016-2017 season when his current contract ends at Louisville.

"When you're 59, you're realistic that you don't have a whole lot of years left," Pitino said at a news conference before the No. 4 Cardinals play Georgetown on Wednesday. "My contract's going to run out in 2017. I'm not coaching any more after that."

I'll believe it when he says it 5 years from now. ANYTHING can happen between now and then. Hell, he could be at a different school at that point.

It would be a helluva lot easier to coach in the B12, so maybe he stays on in his dotage.

Unless someone continues to pay him $8M a year.

Honestly, I can't believe that is making headlines. Given the fickle dispositions of coaches and players in this day in age--his statement means absolutely nothing.

But this is Pitino, an exceptionally honest man.

Who cares.

He will end up being another talking head, next to Digger, on ESPN.  They have a lot in common.

In a couple of years it will probably hurt recruiting....

May just be a ploy to get louisville to up his salary and/or extend his contract.

MattyWarrior

Thats a long time, anything can happen.

Yeah, he's got a standing offer to host at Porcini's as long as he doesn't spend more than 15 sec. with any female patron.

I have a funny feeling Pitino will leave before his contract expires.  I have no evidence to support this theory, but just have a strange feeling about this story.  It really makes no sense to me why he would bring this up right now.

Might be something he's saying to appease his wife and family.  "Sorry for spending 23 hours, 59 minutes and 45 seconds of each day with my mind on coaching, and the rest of the day banging chicks... I promise to retire in 2017"

If UL won a title, I think he'd walk. Aside from that, I don't see any reason for him to leave earlier. He's not a dinosaur by any stretch when it comes to college coaches.
