Just saw this about Indiana on ESPN Insider:

Zeller, Oladipo fueling IU's defense

For the first time in several seasons, Indiana's defensive efficiency is well under one point per possession. The Hoosiers are allowing opponents to shoot only 42 percent from within the arc and more importantly, are moving their feet and not simply reaching and committing fouls.

Two players in particular have contributed to Indiana's .92 OPPP -- Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo. The two underclassmen are both leading the team in deflections; per Shana Daniels of Indiana University's media relations department, Zeller and Oladipo lead the squad with 86 deflections. The team averages 56.1 deflections a game.

A key element of Indiana's defensive resurgence is their turnover rate; according to Ken Pomeroy, the Hoosiers are forcing teams to turn the ball over on 26.8 percent of their possessions, which is the 12th-friskiest in the nation.

As I read that, I just remembered how much we used to hear about deflections. It made me chuckle, and also made me hope that I never have to read an article from another school on the importance of "Paint Touches", or if I do, that the quote is coming from Aki Collins, Tony Benford, or one of Buzz's future-former-assistants and then-head coach.

I think tracking deflections is a way to justify creating another position on the program.
