I don't agree with jumping past a team that doesn't lose, just shouldn't happen. I'll take it though!

Later in the season, I would tend to agree with you.  Early in the season, though, that should happen.  Many did not know what MU was due to their schedule.  So, do you punish MU after they have the confirmation game, due to your prior skepticism?

Other teams may be undefeated, due to their schedule.  But when someone knocks off a ranked team at their home, and the other has feasted on teams above 200, yes, it is proper to jump them in the rankings.  Why keep the other team ranked higher just because they were ranked higher initially.

I, personally, wish they would not release a poll until sometime in mid December anyway.

Agree with you if this was football where the rankings determine who will play for Championship.  In basketball the number just gets you more exposure on TV and in the news...other than that, it is just a number and has little meaning this early in the year.

I think early in the year when you only have a few Big time games and lots of Buy games its really hard to decide where to rank someone.  I don't have a problem with it. Come Late Jan I might agree with you. I'm sure lots of people had not seen us play yet.  Now they have.

I wish this too... but then again, I assume that the voters actually watch a lot of games and it is clear that they don't.  OSU should be number 1 the way they dismantled Duke.  Louisville should not be in the top 5.  Rankings are stupid in general.  MU is going to have to keep on picking away at the polls while other teams are just there.  Once we make a Final Four run, then we might get some respect.

I think neither football nor basketball should have a poll until after at least 3-4 weeks of play, but it will never happen. Networks want to advertise #1 UK vs #5 UNC, or say that there will be 5 top-25 teams in Maui. They build ratings and make money off the BS preseason rankings, no matter how wrong (cough, UCLA, cough) they might be.

There's just too much money in those rankings, they'll never go away.

Would loved to have seen us crack the Top 10 this week but our day is coming. Polls have far more credibility after Xmas.

Not even sure polls mean much after the New Year....

Recall UNC's magical run in the polls last year?

Week 11 (Jan 24): Unranked (not even listed in "also receiving votes")
Week 12: #23 - beat BC and FSU
Week 13: #20 - lost to #5 Duke, beat Clemson
Week 14: #19 - beat Wake and BC
Week 15: #19 - beat NC State, Maryland
Week 16: #13 - beat FSU and #4 Duke
Week 17: #6  - beat Miami, Clemson and lost badly to #5 Duke

The way teams keep slipping up it seems this season all Buzz needs to do is make sure that our guys keep their heads screwed on straight. We should beat this Washington team in a nationally televised game. Then we get two more low level opponents as a tune up before a tough matchup on the road at LSU. If we roll into LSU at 10-0 we should be looking at a 7-8 ranking, which is about the highest we have been in probably 30 years (I think I remember us getting to 7 with the Three Amigos).

Baylor has played a weaker schedule than MU.  Do they deserve to be rated above MU by 3 spots?  Obviously most sports writers think so but the numbers so far suggest MU is better.  The season is early and all these teams will have a chance to be tested.  I only care about the rankings inasmuch as it effects our seed in March, if at all.

As I recall, basketball used to have a preseason top 20 and then not have another ranking until a few weeks into the season.

As someone said above, it doesn't matter as much, as this is not football/BCS.  I agree with that, but then again, why have a poll with that as the only criteria?

Most of the early season polls are irrelevant.  Few have watched anyone play and are ranking based upon last year, who is returning or their name.
