Anyone know if this was printed in the actual paper? I'm just curious if they had a section for "Local" teams or if this was part of an extensive college bball preview.

It's in today's Trib, in a small box, along with Notre Dame and DePaul on the Big East Preview page. The same page also had more in-depth write-ups on ND & DePaul.  Sports section also had articles about Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan State, Northwestern, Loyola and UIC.

Nice picture of Trevor Mbakwe.  "Minnesota, 6-8, senior forward.  He led the Big Ten in rebounding with 10.5 per game while scoring 13.9 points."

I hate how the Trib considers ND "Chicago" but not MU. Same goes for ESPN Chicago.

Heard this recently: For the first time, MU has more students from Illinois than from Wisconsin.  To downplay Chicago's importance is just not wise.  MU killed the Tip Off event a few years ago, alienating quite a few alums.  Shannon Ryan, who wrote this article, is an MU graduate, as are many other Chicago media members, which is why MU gets more notice in Chicago (good or bad including the Taylor signing this summer when the JS had zilch).  MU doesn't have a single hoops player from Chicago on their roster for the first time since 1969 (Taylor will reverse that). 

MU better damn be paying attention to Chicago.

Correct information.  This year's Frosh class had more kids from the Chicagoland area than from Wisconsin for the first time ever.  I am a native Milwaukeean but relocated south of the border decades ago to pursue a professional career.  The simple reality is that Chicago is a more affluent city (especially compared to Milwaukee these days) and therefore has more college bound kids.  MU has recently increased their commitment to the city by opening an Advancement office in the Loop.  Like it or not, surburban Chicago Catholic kids are the lifebood of our university.  And we're doing a fine job attracting them away from DePaul and Loyola.  It's okay that Bears/Cubs fans are headed to MKE for college, because they're Golden Eagle fans while there and generally fall in love with Milwaukee as a wonderful place to live and play for 4 years.
