Anyone remember the article DeCourcy wrote prior to MU's hiring of Crean when he was at MSU that basically praised him as the second coming? Mike had a motive in mind when he wrote it--and an agenda. He does now as well. Crean is as good as gone, assuming the Board of Trustees approves it.

I ask, would a close friend feed the rumor mill?

In 1999, DeCourcy reported Crean sold his house in Lansing in three days. How? He's a close friend of Crean.

Knight....Crean wants the job.  He's lobbying for it, this is no surprise.  It's one of the great jobs out there.

He can get IMMEDIATE access to McDonald's All Americans.  He has no academic restrictions to deal with, if it has a pulse it's accepted, basketball school, Tubby was paid more than $750K more than Crean was.


Absolutely Crean is lobbying for this job.  ZERO QUESTION in my mind.  It's one of those jobs you lobby for.

At least there is no out clause in Crean's contract for UK. Remember this quote from 2003?


Marquette AD Bill Cords said Wednesday that there wasn't a clause that would allow Crean to leave if the Michigan State job ever opens, as was speculated.

"There is no out clause in the contract as has been reported," Cords said. "I can't tell you what's in the contract, but I can tell you what's not in the contract. There is no out clause for Michigan State, Kentucky, the Green Bay Packers or the Dallas Cowboys. Nobody."

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:  it doesn't matter if there's an out clause in the contract.  If Crean wants to leave, he's gone.  That's true of any coach.  A coach that is on record as wanting to leave will be released from his contract -- for a price, of course.  What would Marquette gain from keeping Crean against his will?  You think it's tough to recruit when there's rumors about your coach leaving?  Try recruiting when the coach wants to leave but is being prevented from doing so because his contract doesn't have an "out."  Whether or not there is an out, if Crean wants to leave, he and the University will reach some sort of financial agreement, and he's gone.  If that happens, Marquette's best strategy is to get as much cash out of UK as possible, and then spend it on the next coach.

I assume, based upon the smiley, that you're kidding.  Obviously, times have changed.  Honest question:  when was the last time a coach was prevented from leaving a college?  Was it Al?

I should have been more clear.  I knew you weren't kidding in the sense that it actually happened in the past.  I thought you were kidding in the sense that your post suggested that it might work again.  Maybe you didn't mean to suggest that.  I think things have changed to the point where that really wouldn't work too well any more.
