How do we not have a top 100 player in this class??

Pick a different top 100 list and you'll be okay.

Cause ESPN's rankings are classically flawed and usually out of line with other similar rankings.  Wisconsin's top recruit, Uthoff, is in the 90s.  Would you rather have him than Juan Anderson?  How about Paul Jesperson from Merrill going to UVA, he is in there too?

Jamil Wilson was 31 in the ESPNU 100 if that helps your nerdrage.

In todays ESPN100 we have no recruits but there are 2 unsigned players.  Joseph Uchebo is 6'10, 240 we could try to get him!!

Probably actually improves our chances of getting him.

Not that I expect Uchebo, but just sayin'...

Who cares.  The difference between #50 and #150-#200 is essentially negligible.

While I understand how easy it is to write off the ESPNU rankings, and to bash the original poster, I understand where he is coming from.  If you went back 12 months ago, we were throwing around names like Quincy Miller and Branden Dawson....and then names like Nick Faust and Rodney Hood...

I can understand why people would be disappointed given expectations and the names out there.

Why are ESPN's rankings classically flawed?

I also suppose the other ranking systems aren't classically flawed (so long as an MU recruit is in the list), right?

Doesn't ESPN now employ Dave Telep, who is one of the key founders of the ranking craze of the last decade?

Williams-2 ineffective years and is now transferring
Maymon-cancerous and trasferred mid-season
Cadougan-injured freshman year and now is progressing nicely
Jones-basically did not play freshmen year
Smith-borderline top 100 transferred mid-season
Blue-the most successful of the top 100's

I think part of the problem with recruiting top 100's is they think they are good and do not necessary come in with the strong worth ethic that a player with less fanfare could have. Most of them are good in high school, because they are so much physiclly superior to their classmates and do not always have a high basketball IQ.

I have seen plenty of non-top 100 recruits come through MU that have had better careers. Gardner is a good example of this.

Recruiting rankings are pretty good long term indicators for success. In general, more talent = more wins. We've seen this.

Look at multiple services, over a 5 year period for a program. 10 years is even better. You will see a pattern.

Looking year to year, at only one service; or worse yet, player to player, is a big mistake.

Rankings can be a good tool to use, but it has to be applied properly.

No need to get your feathers ruffled over one service in one given year. It's not a great indicator. Too volatile.

Seems logical and not trying to bust your chops, but what's your methodology for applying rankings (as a good tool) properly?

Of the 6 players I listed 3 or 50% transferred out. I am assuming this is mostly, because they thought they should be playing more and that the team should be structured around them. They have been use to being the the big star in high school and have not adapted to being the average player in college. Buzz needs to recruit players that know they will only be a star if they work hard within the system. Hayward, Diener and Butler averaged about 6 points their first year at MU. They were not stars, but worked hard to fullfill their potential. Blue averaged about the same and if he works hard should be a star in future years. The rankings are really about potential. Potential is only reach through hard work. The one advantage James, Matthews and McNeal had was that MU's returning players were so weak that they had to play as freshmen. MU is deeper now and a top 100 is not guaranteed to start right off the bat. Put Blue, Jones and Smith on that same team in place of the big 3 and they probably all would of started and had similar offensive stats.

Of course we all would have liked to see MU land the above mentioned players, but considering MU hasn't really ever been a destination or lock for 5 and high 4-star recruits for the last 35 years - should we really have expected to land Miller, Dawson, Hood or Faust?  Like always we hoped to land such players...but came up short.  The good news, at least is that MU has been making the Final 5 of more Top 30-40 type kids than has been the case in a long time.  Think if Buzz can put together an Elite 8 or Final Four in the next couple of years, and Jimmy gets drafted, possibly DJO or Crowder the next year - we will see some of these 5-stars sign with MU.

Don't worry.

Looking at this year's transfer list gives me hope that we might land one of the top 100 next year as a transfer. ;)

Well, I think you can't get a good picture from looking at a players individual numbers or a specific class of recruits.

I mean, I know we all get boners over those numbers, but that's not where the rubber meets the road.

Look at overall recruiting ranking over 5 or 10 years. That will tell you if a coach is pulling in good talent and assembling a good roster year in and year out.

I know this is a boring and un-fun way to look at it, but if we're really going to evaluate, that's probably the best way.

Kenosha Warriors point isn't invalid, but it's incomplete at best. Doesn't really tell us anything, ya know?

OK, so Marquette adds a probable starter in transfer Jamil Wilson.  Not a typical recruit for this class, but a newcomer eligibility wise.

Then we get to Juan Anderson, who while he isn't on this top 100 list, is on most of the other top 100 lists.

Derrick Wilson is kind of the mystery guy to me as I just haven't seen much video on him up to this point.

Todd Mayo is the one people don't talk much about rating wise and either it's because he's a 5th year senior, his brother is O.J. Mayo or he hasn't been on the AAU/camp circuit enough to be seen by the recruiting guys.  Just remember he had 33 points in a semi-final win in the national prep championships this spring against Brewster Academy and Brewster's starting lineup included #31 Jakarr Simpson (St. John's), #84 Nadeer Tharpe (Kansas), Markus Kennedy (Villanova), Durand Johnson (Pitt) and Elijah Carter (Rutgers) and coming off the bench was 2012 climber Mitch McGary.  Mayo's teammates included #11 Khem Birch and top 20 2012 player Ricky Ledo.  Mayo scored 83 points in 3 games.

Why not?  We've already landed one of 2010's top 100 as a transfer for next year (via a JUCO).
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
