Thank god we outdrew It's Indiana. How shameful would that have been? Since it could not be the quality of the I4 on-court product it must be related to The Bronzed Beast of Bloomington's marketing skills. Was it a Hai Karate event of some sort?

It wouldn't be shameful. It's hard to outdraw public schools like IU that have 10X the alumni. I'm happy to see Marq flirt with the top 10 year in and year out. The 2nd highest private school attendance in the nation is quite the feat...we are a very fortunate institution.

Just as an FYI, we are the 3rd private school...SU and BYU are both private.

Looking at that list what is even more impressive is that I count only five schools that have an NBA team anywhere near their school.  Marquette has serious pro competition (who plays in the same stadium no less) and still draws well despite only being a mid-sized private school.

But having an NBA arena helps those numbers. But you STILL gotta draw them to your games.

what about those 3,500 students that show up to each game. the best student section in the country?

madtownwarrior

I wish MU would drop the "best student section in the country" crap during intros.  It is actually embarrassing when bringing friends to the game.

Agreed.  If they need to say something there, and they want it to sound like "best student section in the country", they could quickly say "best student section in Milwaukee"

+1.

There should also be an asterisk on overall attendance. Nearly every game I flew out for was disappointing in terms of asses in seats.

totally agree - it's unimaginative and not credible. While the games were always a blast in the student section, I don't think MU is really known for that aspect of the games. Why not some sort of rolling introduction that's different every game? "And now... a student section who has been waiting outside since 6am...." "and now the student body hungry to surmount the Mountaineers..."

etc, etc

Or just don't announce them at all.

They only have a 17k stadium and we have a bigger city for local support.  We will always out draw them.  Don't konw why wh driver felt a need to point it out.

A lot of comments here assume prices and revenue are the same or similar everywhere.  While it's always positive and good to have high attendance...an even more complete chart would be one that also included cost per ticket for the schools as well.  That matters too.  Another would be attendance that showed percent of capacity, etc...

Mr. Nielsen

MU #11 in average attendance, not bad!

The Packers playing into February, doesn't help the other sports teams in terms of tv & radio buzz.

ND only averages 109 more fans per game than DePaul?

Just like some point out CBB's penchant for defending Crean, others have just as obsessive a need to deride him. At the end of the day, neither really has any bearing (or positive effect) on Marquette, but everyone finds satisfaction in their own ways.

OUr attendance numbers are inflated because they are based on sold tickets rather than the actual number in attendance.  But I assume all the other schools numbers are equally inflated.  With respect to the atmosphere of our games, its actually pretty good.  Having had the opportunity to visit Pitt, ND, WI and Louisville this year I'll take MU's atmosphere over all of them.  ND is just plain dull, Pitt had a lot of empty seats and while the arena is nice it's smaller than ours and very quiet.  Louisville's arena is large but not all that impressive and the acoustics and scoreboard are horrendous.  The house of the rodents is pretty dull and I think their record there is a reflection on their coach, not the arena.  If you want to see a home court advantage, go to Duke or Syracuse.

Mr. Nielsen

Attendance numbers in every sport, pro or college are tickets sold. So the numbers are not inflated.

I think % of capacity means nothing.  We could play all our home games at the MECCA and have 100% capacity.  So what?  I'd much rather play at the BC.

College, you are correct.  Not sure on all sports, but in the NFL, it is those that go through the "turnstyle".  The NFL used to report no-shows.  Did away with this a few years back and went to actual attendance.  Again, though, it is for those that go through the gates.  I have attended a few Packer Games through the offices - those are not included in the actual attendance.

MLB and NBA is tickets sold. NFL in most reports it's ticket sold as well.
