They also have tougher academic standards than many schools do (btw...I'm NOT saying they are Stanford) and have a four year HS math requirement that knocks a lot of people out of contention.

I understand that. I'm just saying it would be nice to have the option to simply choose/ turn down really good recruits instead of having to play the waiting game and hoping they choose you.

Can't disagree with you there...in reality there are only a few schools, very few, who have that distinction.

If Buzz stays and continues to build on his success, we'll have much more success in the recruiting wars...kids (and parents) also like stability.

Listening to the Herd a while ago as he was reviewing the remianing 16 trams and and he referred to MU as a school that has "always had a good program" unlike some of the newcomers like VCU and Butler.....that's a start IMO.

Ners

Grew up in Ohio, have lived in Dallas for 31 years....went to MU from 70-74.

My son is a UNC grad so we spent a lot of time in Chapel Hill from 2004-2008....saw them win the 2005 NC while he was there and my son (who is now a third year med student) went back to Chapel Hill for their FF run in 09 so he's "been on Franklin St" two times after winning national championships....if you've never seen what it's like google it.....unbelievable site...as much fun as it was to run to the lake after big MU wins, it pales by comparison.

I'm also a BIG college BB fan and have always liked and respected UNC (when not playing MU) more than any other program ...I subscribe to several pay sites and have been a pay subscriber to UNCs site for years.

BTW, my son didn't go there because of me....he turned down Yale, Stanford, Princeton and a bunch of other places when he was nominated for and then was named a  Morehead Scholar at UNC.....

Funny story....before going to his Morehead interviews his school arranged for several faculty members to do a number of "mock interviews" to prepare him.....his last question was "who is Dean Smith?"....he had no idea and they laughingly told him he'd better know before going. When he went there he could have cared less about basketball.....he's died in the wool now....and has been back to Chapel Hill five times since graduating. It really is a very special place...he's probably going to apply to both UNC and Duke Med for his residency....he really loves the place and wants to live there.

Cool story about your son..and not knowing who Dean Smith was!!  I've never been to Chapel Hill, but have heard very good things.  UNC will almost always be a blue blood program..so long as they don't hire another Guthridge!

Thanks for the background/info..and for the info on Roy Williwams and setting me straight on his realness!
