I caught the Spurs-Lakers on Sunday on ABC with Novak getting 19 minutes including the entire 4th quarter.  Partially due to the blowout score, Novak became a major topic of discussion throughout the 4th quarter between Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson after Van Gundy stated that Novak is the best pure shooter in the NBA today.  Jackson clearly did not agree and the dialogue made for some interesting discussion on where Novak stacks up against the finest shooters in the NBA.  Nice to see Steve get picked up for the rest of the year on a contender and be a topic of conversation on a national broadcast.  Perhaps he gets a ring too.  At the very least some playoff cash...

If basketball was a 3 point shooting contest where you don't need to work to get open and could take uncontested shots, I think Novak is probably as good a shooter as there is in the NBA.

Unfortunately, you do have to get yourself open and shoot with someone closing in on you, so he isn't the best pure shooter when it comes to game situations, which is all that really matters.
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

I saw that last night too.  Van Gundy kept saying that Novak should be in the three-point shooting contest at the all-star game and that he'd win it every time.  I agree, and I'd love to see that!

Except he lost to a girl when he did that contest in college.  He probably still has nightmares about that and would refuse to enter if the NBA asked him.

Should be safe then - no 'girls' in the NBA as far as I know

Depends what hairstyle Andrei Kirilenko is sporting that night.  He's very effeminate sometimes.

I said a couple of weeks ago he was best pure shooter I ever saw. Glad VanGundy thinks so highly of his abilities.

SacWarrior

He may be the best "pure shooter" but there's a reason the  only time you'll see MU women's players shoot better than the men's is in wide-open 3 point contests on Madness night.

There's a reason that Kobe, LeCrab and Melo will never win a 3-point contest. Larry Bird id the only real exception I can think of- A pure shooter who knew how to get open.

I read a great article on ESPN.com on Novak recently. It was about the economy and the market in the NBA, and they wrote it immediately after he signed with San Antonio. Seems like a really great guy, he kept talking about how blessed he and his family are to be paid the way they are. Kinda wish I could have gone here when he did.

Except those playing in Miami and crying after losses.

leever

To paraphrase Tom Hanks, there's no crying in basketball.

Van Gundy is the same dude who did have Steve get the splinters out his ass, even when the Rockets played at the BC.
