What a stupid first-team. Five guards? And 12/15 players in the first three teams are guards? Couldn't they at least try to assemble a working "team" into their first-team honors? Maybe that's the way of awards now, just hand it to the five best, but it's about as far from a working team as you could ever find.

I'm not sure the intent is to assemble a working team so much as identify the league's top players. It's been a great year for guards in the Big East.
I am a little surprised about Hansbrough over Walker and Hardy for POY, though, and Pitino over Lavin for COY.

brewcity77

Agreed on both points. Lavin is definitely coach of the year, they will almost assuredly finish top 3, which no one expected (except Pitino, apparently), and UConn was a one-man show behind Walker. Hansbrough's fine, but not POY material.

MerrittsMustache

Nice to see some Marquette names on there.

Pitino over Lavin is a joke but perhaps they're discounting what Lavin has accomplished because St. John's is a senior-laden team.

I could envision Blue eventually putting up stats like Wanamaker from Pitt. Unfortunately, some fans would probably consider him a bust because they only look at points.

Pitino must have gotten the awatrd for his performance on restaurant table tops.

What a travesty.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Sorry to be nitpicky, but Cleveland Melvin of Depaul for Freshman of the year?

Come on. Didn't Jeremy Lamb from UConn light it up this year? He sure lit us up at the BC
Warrior in the class of 2011.

Melvin - 14.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg
Lamb - 9.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg

Melvin and Brandon Young have been bright spots in another season of misery for DePaul.

Lamb lit us up (24 pts), but so did Melvin (20 pts). And unlike Lamb, Melvin never hit a cold streak. He's scored in double-digits in all but 2 Big East games, and has scored 20+ in 7 of DePaul's conference games. Freshman of the Year is probably the easiest call in the conference, and it's Melvin all day.

All JUCOs, for what it's worth.

The Horror!

I love all three of those guys - and Joe, what could have been!

Where would we be without all five of our JUCO transfers?  Certainly not in the tournament, and we wouldn't have a senior night tonight.  They worked their asses off to get here, produced at a high level, balanced the classes, and represented MU well.  What's not to love?

I guess it really is a guards game.
All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

I agree with most, with exception of Pitino as COY, should be Lavin.  Also thought Hardy should be POY.

Congrats to Jae Crowder.  Great job.

Impossible to tell.

You simply don't know who Buzz may have recruited instead of the JUCOs.  Had he recruited 5 HS players as good as the Amigos over the course of the last 3 years, they'd be freshmen, sophs, and juniors this year, and we absolutely would be in the tournament.

mikem91288

Ah yes Brew City knows all. I don't think giving an all big east award to anyone from Depaul is the easiest call in the conference.

Thanks for that keen observation.  "For what it's worth", it's not worth much.

I'm sorry, but what exactly has you so upset?
My point - which I thought most Scoopers would manage to pick up on - was that for all the grief MU has taken for recruiting JUCOs, they're proving to be some of the team's best and most respected players.
I suppose my mistake here was making the assumption that everyone would be able to understand that. My bad, I guess. Next time I'll be more clear for our less astute readers.

lab_warrior

Well, it sure read like you were trashing JUCO, aka, "non-traditional" players.  So yeah.
