MU really, really relies on its big four of DJO, Butler, Crowder and Buycks.

Otule is improving, but his Big East stats are pretty ugly.

Blue and Cadougan chip in their share, but it is a wasted year so far for Williams and Jones.

Gotta like Crowder's stats.  NIce.....

Blue's 3.8ppg is sort of a shock, thought it was higher.  Needs a good second half.

Otule is not improving.

They want Otule to defend.  That's all he is at this point.

The lack of scoring outside of the "Big Four" is likely the reason that our rotation is too short.  Next year, two of those guys are leaving so I hope that at least two will step up....if not a third or a fourth.

I read Otule's role a little differently.  The way I see it, Otule is valued for his ability to get good offensive position, even when he doesn't get the ball (which is more often than not).  When Otule posts up (the deeper the better) he keeps the other team's largest defender out of the paint and restricts him to tight man to man.  This goes a long way to opening up the paint, and doesn't allow the other team's 5 to roam the basket area, making it nearly impossible for our smaller players to drive and finish.  It also makes it easier for JFB to try to score from the other block.

He is a space eater.  Our PIP are up 35% this season...while our FT's made are up 23%. Our bigs open up driving lanes. Their value isn't often found in their individual statistics.  I liked in the UCONN game that Buzz went to Otule at least four times at the start of the game in the deep block trying to establish an interior presence.

btw, our opponents' PIP metric is down (1.6%).

OK, so PIP are up ... now let's see how effective MU's bigs are against this zone.  I hope we see more minutes from Gardner -- he's more effective at passing out of the post than Otule and could help reverse the ball to find open slots in the zone.

Agree on Gardner.  Last year MU lost the PIP Battle 56-22 to Cuse. I suspect Buzz will go small ball primarily, though, with lots of flashing up at the FT line by Jimmy or circling up Joe/Jae at the key. Jae better have his inside game on as well.

So, PIP was 34-24 in favor of Cuse.  But, PIP+FTM was 48 to 42 MU.  Glad to see Buzz give the minutes to Otule and Gardner vs. all small ball against the zone.  Still hard to see in the individual stat line, but the spacing a low post presence provides frees up our skills players.  We won the rebounding battle as well against a taller team in a tough zone.
