Two weeks ago all we heard from some of our biggest fans was that Vander couldn't carry DJ Newbill's gym bag.

Well . . . . since you brought it up:

  • #1 in Steals - Newbill would be tied for 11th
  • #3 in A/TO ratio - tied for 10th
  • # 5 in APG and ARate - 12th
  • #11 in Minutes % and ORating tied 11th in Minutes %, #2 in ORating
  • #13 in Reb/Game - 4th in RPG
  • #1416 in PPG -  15th
  • #12 in FT% - 6th
  • #8 in eFG% - 4th
  • #11 in 3FG% - 2nd

I think its clear that if we put Newbill in this chart, he would rank just as favorably.  Both players have strengths.

Blue is a better playmaker, and in steals and blocks.

Newbill is a better shooter and rebounder.

Seriously, the occasional Newbill comment is fine, but this is just reaching. He went to another school. Get over it. If it's that big of a deal, track down Buzz in three days and air your grievances to him. The horse is dead. Dead dead dead.

No horse is ever dead as long as a way can be found to make either our current coach or our former coach look bad.

1.  Why did you choose to go after me and not Lenny, who was the one who initially brought Newbill into the discussion?

Lenny made some remark about Newbill, clearly reflecting his agenda. I responded with a factual and reasonable comparison because a) I thought it would be interesting and b) lenny deserved some pushback for such a gratuitous and fact-free remark.

So I do find it curious you chose to go after me rather than Lenny.

I think this is just another example supporting Chico's claim that people look first as who's making the post, rather than what the post actually is.

If you were truly upset that someone brought up Newbill, you should have gone after Lenny.

2.  How is it "reaching?"  Lenny made a comment. I responded. In theory, thats how message boards are supposed to work.  I didn't insert the comparison into some irrelevant thread.

I directly responded to a comment made by another poster.   If that bothers you, perhaps you shouldn't read message boards.

3.  How in the world did you interpret my post as a "grievance"?

If you're so thin skinned that posting a factual comparison, and making the comments that both players have strenghts, Blue is a better ball handler and Newbill a better shooter/rebounder strikes you as a "grievance", I suggest you stop reading message boards.

3.  Our former recruits are mentioned here all the time.  They will forever remain of interest because they were one time MU recruits. We just had comments on former recruit Luke Cothron.  We had comments on former player Jeronne Maymon.  I must have missed your criticism to those who brought those players up, requesting that they take it directly to Buzz, or calling the topics "dead dead dead".

Yes Newbill is awesome........ but I'd rather have Jamil Wilson anyday of the week.

Hence, the ends justify the means.

By the way, Newbill could be helping MU with outside shooting this year. Wilson is redshirting. Hopefully Wilson will help MU with rebounding next year.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Split this off - you guys can continue discussing newbill all you like over here.  Please leave the other thread about blue.

Who among MU's current rotation of guards do you see Newbill playing in front of?   He doesn't play the point.

Outside shooting?  Have you watched Newbill play? He has taken 6 3 point shots all year.  If you take away his 2-2 game against Spring Hill, he is a whopping 1-4 against D-1 opponents.  The two games I watched, he did not make a shot outside the paint.

If DJ Newbill Was a Top 20 Recruit...he would have gone to Villanova.

ChicosBailBonds

I guess my question is why was the original post even qualified as "top 20 recruit"....MU hasn't had a top 20 recruit in what, 30 years?

I think the original comparison was made between Blue and the Top 20 recruits in the country, but I'm not positive. Either way, the subject is misleading.

It was tied in to a blog post looking at how the top 20 recruits had fared so far.

1.  Why did you choose to go after me and not Lenny, who was the one who initially brought Newbill into the discussion?

1) When I posted, Lenny's comment had been deleted from the thread. There was no post from Lenny whatsoever, so you were the only person who had posted. Looking back, the only place I have seen Lenny's comment was in your quote. I haven't seen it in the original VB thread, and it's not in this one either. I don't know if it was deleted by a mod, by Lenny himself, or if it was posted elsewhere in another thread and you chose to bring that quote into this topic. I'll assume it's one of the two formers and not the latter, but again, still haven't seen that quote, so who else would I address it to?

2) How is it reaching? It's not relevant. Again, I see no actual quote from Lenny except in the quote you made, so as near as I can tell, you brought Newbill into the argument when there was no reason to do so. He doesn't have a place here. His place is at Southern Miss, and it's time people accepted that. As I said, it's beating a dead horse, and it comes across as a juvenile attempt to stir the pot. I get that some people like to troll for the sake of it, but it doesn't accomplish anything productive. And from my perspective, I have no idea where the response to another poster comes from (aside from your quote box) because Lenny doesn't have a post in either thread.

3) And obviously you didn't get the airing of grievances reference. Others did, and I'm glad they did.

3) Hmm...did you take counting lessons from Buzz, Macaulay Culkin's older brother in Home Alone? Yes, other recruits are brought up, but I have pointed out before that comparing Vander Blue and DJ Newbill is simply stupid. I pointed it out a week ago to Brad Forster, now I guess I have to do so again. Blue had nothing to do with Newbill's recruitment. Blue was not the reason Newbill ended up not attending Marquette. If not for Jamil Wilson, they would both be here now. There's no reason to compare Vander Blue and DJ Newbill, because it isn't like we took Blue at Newbill's expense. Now if people want to compare the numbers between Newbill and Wilson once both are playing and have numbers to compare, that's fine and sensible. But the idea that we have to constantly compare two guys who were both slated at the same time to end up here is just dumb. They have nothing at all to do with one another. It's about as sensible as comparing Youssoupha Mbao and Jamail Jones. Yes, Jones is here and Mbao is not, but Mbao left Marquette after Jones had already committed, and if he had not left, both would be here simultaneously. Jones' commitment had nothing to do with Mbao's departure. There is no relevant connection between Mbao leaving and Jones arriving, just as there is no relevant connection between Newbill leaving and Blue arriving, and thus no reason to constantly harp on comparisons between the two.

I've got the poll!

FRANK: Many Christmases ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reach for the last one they had - but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way!

KRAMER: What happened to the doll?

FRANK: It was destroyed. But out of that, a new holiday was born. "A Festivus for the rest of us!"

KRAMER: That musta been some kind of doll.

FRANK: She was.
