540 ESPN Returns As Radio Flagship For MU Basketball

Marquette men's basketball fans will be able to follow the program all season long on 540 ESPN, which returns for the fifth year as the flagship station for the team's nine-member radio network.

Love 540 Espn. I only wish it came in clear in Chicago all day long. You can only listen to the Chicago guys complain about cutler for so long each day.

Chicago? I wish it came in clear in Racine.

Racine? I can't hear it to well in the southside of Milwaukee.  :'(

When is the TV part of the schedule coming out for the local sports32 games?

I bought an iPhone last year pretty much for the sole purpose of listening to Marquette games. Just get the ESPN radio app on any smartphone and you can listen to the games on there. Works great on the go or when I'm at work.

Is anyone giving advance notice to them to switch the internet feed over when the game starts?  Must have been 3 or 4 times last year they kept generic sports radio or high school basketball on until someone called to remind them after the game had already started.

Assuming Homer is still on board? Ugh. Although, with their high-powered antenna, maybe I'll get to hear the post game past 26th and Wisconsin this year. It is 2010 afterall.

I have no beef with Homer or the programming on 540, but echo everyone else's comments about the signal. Its awful. Its pathetic that ESPN, a major network, is not willing to shell out for a decent signal in a city like Milwaukee. Especially when Badgers are being carried on 620, which you can hear all the way to Chicago, the difference is really pathetic.

I can hear 620 all the way out in craptastic Iowa during the day like I'm in Brookfield.

I've often wondered if they are trying not to step on the toes of their other ESPN affiliate, ESPN 1000 out of Chicago. Granted, you can hear ESPN 1000 much better in Milwaukee than you can 540 in Chicago, but ESPN 1000 doesn't come in nearly as well up here as say 670 The Score. Maybe ESPN deliberately doesn't put out as much power so they ensure the locals are listening to their domestic station when they have the same programming, like the World Series (can't imagine radios tuned to 1000 in Milwaukee does any good for their advertising).

Again, no idea if there's any truth to that notion, but it might be a possibility.

I was on I-80 today, making my way back to Milwaukee.  I picked up 540 ESPN perfectly, and I was still east of South Bend. How is that for coverage?  Its not the first time that has happened either. Although, it was around 1:00 today, so that might have something to do with it. But it worked perfect as I went through Chicago.

Ive also picked up a pretty good 540 signal north of Green Bay...and ESPN Madison I stretches pretty far north and west as well.

augoman

incredible.  I can't get it in Oconomowoc, nor does it project past Delafield.  Weakest possible station, to replace 1250, which had to reduce it's signal strength at sundown.  So frustrating.  Especially since MU had 620am when it was one of the first radio stations in Milwaukee, but lost it (to WTMJ) due to lack of broadcasts.

MUEng92

Maybe you guys have to move out west (Waukesha County that is).  Unlike 1130 when MU was on that station, I can hear 540 clearly all day.  1130 powers down at 4:15 during the winter, so I would have a headache after MU games from having to listening between stretches of pure static.

Litehouse

I don't know about this north of GB stuff, I've never been able to get 540 north of Grafton.

Thanks GOMU, I think everyone on here was thinking I am a big liar.  I listened to 540 driving around the north side of chicago all day yesterday.   Granted big power lines can cause havoc but for the most part it comes in pretty well.

rico49

If most MU games were on before 5pm the 540 issue would be a moot point.  540 AM is so bad that when returning home to Grafton from the MU night games, I lose the post-game programming at the Milwaukee county line.  Can't be a good thing for garnering Bucky fans to listen to the "enemy", and maybe enjoying an alternative brand of basketball that may be more exciting.

I live in the southwest suburbs of Chicago just north of I-80 and I work just over the border in Hammond, Indiana.  I can almost always listen to games on 540 when I drive home from work.  I can pick it up more clearly down here than on I-94 driving home from Milwaukee, where it cuts out usually around Highway 50.

What's the beef with Homer? I think he is great

1) Homer's radio show is awful.  He is seriously going to call it the World's Greatest Sports Talk Show?

2) His interviews suck.  Maybe he can get some pointers from Brad Galli.

3) His play-by-play sucks.  He leaves out key details like possesion changes.  Also does everyone need a crappy nickname?

I'm not saying I could do a better job but I can think of +100 people who could.
