IU media basketball camp video

I stumbled across this today and would not have posted because I know how easily tempers flair whenever Crean's name is brought up but it really ticked me off. Marquette ran a media "boot camp" just last year. How in the world would it be unprecedented then, as Crean so incorrectly stated. I'm not saying Crean knowingly ripped off the idea, but...

Here's a little gallery with over 80 pictures, documenting last year's event at Marquette. I guess it's not that big a deal in the big scheme of things. It's just yet another way Crean proves his moral fiber. http://marquetteimages.com/albums.php?albumId=89787

That's what he's so good at.  MU did this last year and what pub did they get?  IU does it this year and has Pat Forde from ESPN, Bozich, etc, etc....national writers.  He's good at getting pub for his program, has been since he started at MU and is continuing that elsewhere.

Chicos, unlike a lot of posters I don't have a personal vendetta against him. I don't know him on a personal level so I am not a god judge. All I'm saying is that  he was dishonest in his characterization of the event. If a little school like Arkansas Pine Bluff had done it then I wouldn't blame him. However, a large university, and one that he happened to coach at before, is pretty much indefensible. He straight up lied.

As for the media camp last year, Jeff Goodman was about the biggest name there. So you are correct, he is mighty good at that. Doesn't make it right to lie about it though.

Crean should take notes on recruiting from Buzz rather than media day.

Buzz bringing in stud recruits and crappy media or Crean bringing in crappy recruits and stud media?

I think I know who everyone would pick.  Well almost everyone...

I think you guys haven't been following the commitments both programs have received in the last two months....they're both doing very well in that department.

They are both good.

Crean has a few nice recruits, you are right.  He actually has a few nice ones in the next two or three years in each class.

Crean did have a weak 2010, and is in danger of a weak 2011 unless he can get one of the two big guys left in-state. Buzz has a way better 2010, and at least equal in 2011 with Anderson right now. That is not even counting Wilson.

Buzz is better at recruiting with less to sell.  Buzz is an incredible recruiter and it might not even be fair to compare Crean to Buzz because Buzz just has more abilities to relate with people and is a better coach.

Crean is a little better with the media, but honestly Buzz is getting pretty good himself.  Buzz may improve to the point where Crean has nothing on him in terms of talent.  Crean will have the experience edge only.

I think TC even realized he reached his ceiling at MU, and didn't think he could take things any higher than he did - largely due to the challenges he faced on the recruiting trail - as far as primarily only being able to get good classes every 3 years.  Taking us to a Final Four was a great accomplishment, even though outside of that he got us exactly 1 NCAA win in his 9 years at MU.

I think most all of us as fans, being objective would bet on Buzz before Crean, if you were to ask:  Which coach will take their team to a Final Four first?  Buzz Williams or Tom Crean.  Uh Oh..I think I'm going to have to poll the Scoop and see what the feeling is..
"I'm not sure Cadougan would fix the problems on this team. I'm not even convinced he would be better for this team than DeWil is."

Who are the "etc., etc." you refer to? I don't really know, nor do I care to look up the names of the guys in the video, so I'm asking. Looked to me like a bunch of guys from the Terra Haute Times and the Fort Wayne Tribune. Still not a bad thing, given his need to get in-state players, but the situation there is obviously different. MU never has been and never will be a statewide program.

I'm not suggesting it isn't important to have th media on your side, but the other question becomes, what is the real impact of this? Does it help recruiting? Yeah maybe. But, if the recruiting is sub-par again this year (or beyond), and they continue to suck, the already friendly media will continue to cut Crean slack because "they work so hard," "they do things the Indiana way," and other meaningless crap like that. Ask any national CBB writer, analyst, etc. who the hardest working teams are, and I guarantee you Buzz William's MU team comes up 4-5 times before IU is even mentioned.

Also, I agree with the initial sentiment, there is no way that an Elvis Presley Caliber control freak like Tom Crean did not know this thing took place at MU a year earlier, which is of curse why he said, "As far as we know its unprecedented."

Don't disagree with you on the "hard working" comments or many others you made.  I don't disagree with the original post, either, this was probably "lifted" off MU.  You guys do realize that Crean and Buzz talk and are friends...right?  They share ideas.

At any rate, here is why it matters for IU.  A program that is still recovering from two years ago.  Look at the pub they got from that event nationally and compare it to MU's pub for the same event?  Despite MU being a NCAA team last year and IU being pathetic.

Doesn't change that he's a douche.  He's just smart at getting exposure for his program, despite how bad they are.  We would dream of this coverage across Wisconsin and nationally for the same event run last year.  That's just reality.

Crean will not be at IU in 4 years.

Book it.

He is a puppet for the University. He helped and is continuing to help clean up Indiana's brand.
He'll be loved by the fans for doing that.

But he'll be out because his teams simply aren't winning IU-style.
