Katz breaks down all the tournaments and keeps Marquette as a team in the mix for the tourny rather than as a predicted dancer. Thoughts?

MU is returning 9 of 22 Studs of the Game from last year.  I'll take In The Mix.

For a national media, there are a lot of question marks on the team.  From their perspective, I think these are reasonable question marks:
-MU lost a first round pick and two starting guards.  All three barely saw the bench.
-There are only two starters coming back, and two other guys who got more than 10 mins off the bench
-DJO and Jimmy were inconsistent at times, and maybe people will figure out how to guard them
-Buycks and Fulce played, but were inconsistent
-Who plays point guard?
-Who rebounds in Hayward's absense?
-How will Buzz do without Crean's players for the first time?
-Is Buzz a flash in the pan early like a Quinn Snyder at Mizzou or Mike Davis at Indiana?
-How will a team with no upperclass players who were top 100 recruits fair?
-How good are any of these 4-star players who are all underclassmen?  Will they even be able to contribute?

We all have plenty of reason to be excited because we have all seen how good Butler and DJO are.  But the national media is not following Junior's progress in the pro-am or Otule's development.  I think this is one of the better teams we have had but understand how the national media would question MU.

Simply, it is a year we have to prove ourselves worthy.  Last year we had to also, and we had Lazar.  So, very understandable.

Beating Duke would be a nice way to get into the national spotlight.

Jimmy outplaying Kyle Singler would give us a chance to win against Duke and put Jimmy on the radar of NBA scouts potentially.

While I'd love nothing more than Jimmy outplaying Singler, I have to ask.....seriously?

It would certainly make my day but I am not counting on that one......hope it happens.... but.....

On paper, in the mix next year and if we make it then 30 wins in 2011-12.  A good showing or win against duke would indicate we are a solid 25-win team - if we aren't ready for that game then it could be a close call.

I'd put E Williams, Fulce and Crowder on Singler and let Jimmy concentrate on getting some points.  If Singler covers Jimmy, it increases Singler's work load.

Absolutely Jimmy can go head to head with Singler and possibly outplay him.  Singler is a very good player who thrives in Coach K's system and will be very effective as a senior.  But our best player should be able to do just fine against him.  Singler is smart and talented, but a player of Butler's caliber should be able to match him.

Since Singler goes to Duke, he gets way more press (good and bad) than he should so a nice performance by Jimmy against him will look better than it should.  It is a great opportunity for Jimmy and the team.

I predict a DJO coming out party vs. Duke.

And as the younguns say on the street, "No homo."

As much as I dislike Duke, Singler is a pretty darn good college player.  He was the best player on the team that won the National Championship last year.

From an outsider's view (and, mine as well), MU has high hopes this year reather than "expectations".  Lets roll the ball out in October and enjoy what could again be a bumpy ride.

And this was the best part of Singler in that game:

Every team has reasonable question marks heading into the year.  You are right that the national media does not follow most teams closely, but heck they are suppossed to be experts and their job is to know the teams they cover and talk about.  How about this:

MU brings back 2 of its top 3 players from last year.  In addition they have a healthy Junior C. who would have been the starter last year.  Throw in Fulce who improved during the year after recovering from some knee issues.  Add in a great recruiting class that mixes young great talent (Blue) with an experienced POY from the Juco ranks (Crowder) and this team can easily build on last year's success.
