KANSAS STATE
Shut the doors
Marquette will fly in for a scrimmage with the Wildcats that is to be closed to the public.

MANHATTAN, Kan. | A top-25-type men's basketball program will play Sunday at Kansas State. Don't look for highlights on the 10 o'clock news, however.

Wildcats coach Bob Huggins said the Marquette Golden Eagles will fly in for a closed-door, not-for-public-consumption scrimmage. Marquette coach Tom Crean called Huggins to arrange it.

"It's going to be invaluable for us because they're a really good team, they're an extremely well-coached team, they play really hard, and they may have the best point guard in the country (Dominic James)," Huggins said Wednesday at media day in Bramlage Coliseum.

Nothing against K-State's only scheduled exhibition opponent, Washburn on Nov. 4, Huggins said, but ...

"For us it's so much better than playing a D-II school and winning by 25," Huggins said. "Not that there aren't some D-II's around here that may beat us. But the size, athleticism (of a Marquette) is just so much bigger and better."

Huggins touched on numerous subjects:

•Starters. "I would think Cartier (Martin) and Dave (Hoskins). From there, I don't know."

•Martin may start working at the power forward spot, but Huggins said he needs to learn how to play the perimeter "if he wants to have a future in this game."

•Senior Lance Harris: "Lance kind of gets in a comfort zone we kind of need to push him out of sometimes. He's probably athletically our best guy."

•Freshman big men Jason Bennett and Luis Colon: "You know what you're going to get with Luis. He comes in every day and works. We've got to get Jason to work at it every day. We've got to get him more consistent from an effort standpoint."

•Expectations on Selection Sunday in March: "Sunday evening you don't want to sit there and hope. That's not any fun. The thing to do is know you're good enough that you're in, then you go in there and get seeded and complain about your seed. That's a lot more fun."

This is a great idea, assuming of course, that none of our players get stabbed.

While it may not bring as much fan satisfaction, in my opinion this is 10x more useful for the team than playing an exhibition game.  I wouldn't mind seeing both exhibition games go away in favor of tough D1 scrimages!

agreed........this is a brilliant move by Crean.
