As you all probably know Jeronne Maymon transferred to Tennessee back in January and is eligible next December. There are some people on our board who called him a "fat, lazy, waste of a scholarship" when he decided to transfer. We lose one post player next season (Wayne Chism), but return 4 players who logged minutes in the post and have the #1 Power Forward in the nation coming in (Tobias Harris). I know he was fairly highly regarded coming out of high school last season, but I didn't expect too much from him. Maymon has been practicing with the team and Pearl called him a "tough guy with a lot of energy" and he's apparently looked pretty good to my surprise. Now, what's the story with his father Tim, as I understand that was a major concern at Marquette and what are the strengths of his game? Thanks.

It is the opinion of many that Jeronne's decision to leave Marquette was more Mr. Maymon's than it was Jeronne's - that Marquette was running our offense through his freshman son, which was what he was looking for, as he sees Jeronne going to the NBA. I'll let others comment on his basketball ability who saw him play in high school. We wish Jeronne the best and hope his dad will leave him alone, but don't see it happening.

Maymon will make an excellent #2 SG and his father will be the ultimate UT fan.  Don't expect Maymon to play more than that second half of the season, he will then declare for the draft.

Apparently Maymon has played mostly 4 and 5 according to Pearl, doesn't have the skills, decision making ability  or body to play the wing.

Maymon has some talent, but his biggest problem is that he (and even more so, his father) thinks he's a 2 when in reality he's a 3/4 tweener. In fact, his skill set right now is more like an undersized 4, though he certainly could develop more perimeter skills over the next few years.
At MU, because of injury and other roster issues, he was forced to play the post, which his old man in particular did not like.

NersEllenson

I don't think any of us didn't think he was talented.  He was a Top 100 rated recruit for a reason.  His departure from MU was pretty weird, and most people here think it was almost entirely orchestrated by his father, and not so much his personal desire.  The biggest issued being he (or his father) didn't like the way he was being utilized as a "4."  Alledgedly, there were some demands made that he be played at the "2" or "3" or he was going to transfer.  His Dad felt the offense needed to run through Jerrone (as a first semester freshman).  Our coach didn't give into the demands, and at that point the decision to transfer was made.  It caught our coach and players completely off guard, as Jerrone never expressed to anyone on staff or to his teammates that he was unhappy with how he was being used.

By all accounts JMay is a good kid, and his Dad probably a little bit crazy, in the overbearing parent sense.  The position of most here is that it is probably better for JMay to be farther away from home (and his Dad).

Most of us wish JMay well, though there are a few bitter fans about how it went down, etc.

Sorry Vol fan, forgot the teal color, which basically means, not true.

Others will post the same, but Maymon wanted to play the #2 when he does not have that skill.  He should be a #4 and if Pearl plays him there he will be an asset, he does have the #4 skills. Nice passing touch and body of a PF. His father is a pest and over-bearing parent and believes his son will be a lottery pick.  Good luck.

BTW, I watched Tobias Harris play last night in McDonald AA game and he is real, real good.  If you get Selby, you are in for some great times down there.

Vol-

If you want the full story, there are a few dozen threads back in December ..

If you want more about his dad, try this:

I'll agree with those here - JMay seems like a good kid.  Didn't see enough of him to tell how good he'll be in college, but his dad is a nutcase.  If you haven't read this article, it sums it up (from Tim Maymon's viewpoint).

This quote tells about all though...
QuoteRegardless of where the 18-year-old Madison native declares where he intends to play next, Tim Maymon has made it clear that MU will not be far from his thoughts. "[Marquette] didn't want to play the game right," said the elder Maymon, according to Madison.com, "so now we're going to watch them lose every game. That's just how it works."

Tim Maymon is a cancer for sure, hopefully BP can keep him at bay better than Buzz did.

Nukem2

Maymon is a skilled passer and a decent shooter.  Probably a 4 as his quicknes is questionable to play the 3 and he does not have the lift to be a 5 as he is undersized and needs to jump faster/quicker than he can.  Not sure how he fits into TN's style, if at all.  Seemed to be a hard worker.  Father has been described as "the ultimate helicopter parent".  For JMay's sake, hopefully papa Tim stays away from Knoxville.

Here is my fearless prediction.  BYW, I really believe that I am being objective with this, I don't dislike Jeronne, but I, like anyone else who has heard of his father Tim's antics, can only consider his dad a headcase.

Tennessee will not be Jeronne's last school.  Hopefully, Tennessee's distance will help.  But his Dad can will always call, and I assume will be coming in town for games.  Jeronne is not going to be willing to do what's best for the team, if Pearl's opinion regarding his ability to play the two doesn't change.  He will go wherever he needs to play the two spot or at least the three.  To me it was a sign of massive denial by Jeronne and his dad for him to transfer to Tennessee.  Tennessee is always going to have great options at the two spot, so by transferring there to play the two, Jeronne was saying that he is capable of playing the two at a very high level in Division I, and that the Marquette coaching staff was incompetent to not agree with that.  If it's true that Pearl is already saying that Jeronne is a four or a five, the tea leaves are not too difficult to read here.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Freeport Warrior

I was surprised by his lack of hops close to the hoop. He seemed to have a good medium range jumper, but he got stuffed more than a few times underneath against much inferior opponents early. Considering your talent coming in and your wide-open style, he's probably a role player with 5 inside fouls to give.  Personally, I'm glad to be rid of his dad and Jeronne's leaving gives EWill more potential playing time (the kids seemed like a clueless freshman at times, but I loved his effort and hustle).

MerrittsMustache

Maymon is a big body but played slow (some said lazy?) and appeared to lack athleticism and explosiveness. IMO, he was the type of kid who was always bigger and stronger than everyone else so it was going to take him some time to get used to playing major college basketball. He struggled somewhat early on even against the "cupcakes" MU played against. He has a chance to be a good player, he just has to play to his strengths instead listening to his father who thinks he's the next LeBron.

By most accounts, he was pretty well-liked by his teammates and is a good kid...but like just about everyone has said before, he worst attribute is a clueless, overbearing father.

Hards Alumni

Problem is, he was the best player in Wisconsin for 2 years.  This will give anyone a big head.  Realistically, Wisconsin basketball is... mediocre at best.  Are there some great players?  Absolutely.  Is Jeronne Maymon one of these?  Probably not.

In my opinion, if JMay can accept his role as a bench player he will be successful.  He is not a 'big body' type of player and seemed to get dozed by the cupcakes we played.  His shot comes from his shoulder and can be blocked.  Hopefully for Jeronne, the UT staff is working with him to improve this.

He seemed like a good guy, and still has a chance to become a real good college player.  I never see him as being 'the guy' that many around here thought he was going to be.

RawdogDX

I'm don't think his dad will be a problem.  Your AD must have had a long talk with him that probably involved a few contracts, and i'm sure this entire ordeal will be a reality check.

He's good enough to play, he may log a few minutes this year.   I think he'll be a solid a solid start as a senior.

Canadian Dimes

The comparison that i would make of Maymon that i think any Vol fan could picture and appreciate is a 6'5" version of your boy Williams.  Not very athletic at all, zero hops and did not seem to have much of a motor.  Now the atleticism and hops can be worked on but he will never become a world class athlete.

He will need to be commited to the fact that he is no longer in HS and will no longer be the biggest strongest most athletic player on the court every night.  In fact he will be one of the least, if he can decide he wants to over come those limitations by becoming the hardest working smartest type player on the floor then I think he can have a nice career.  He is a 4 will never be athletic enough in college to guard a 3 or smaller.  If he does not very quickly realize that he needs to lose the baby fat and greatly increase his athleticism and work ethic that I do not see a very successful future for him.  Especially not for a Pearl team that will assuredly have a ton of athleticism and effort.
I beleive maymon has the making to be a contributor for Tenn in the future, i dont know if he has the work ethic or dedication to mold himself into what he needs to be to earn playing time.  We will see... if he commits i think he could be a 2 year starter.
