Heres another article where a PA coach compares DJ Newbill to the likes of Gerry McNamara (sp?).

Not sure if this was posted so don't get your panties in a bunch if it has been. Happy friday....if we can possibly have that today.

I really hate the comparison game. If he's half what McNamara was, it'd be good. Btw, has he scored 55 points in a h.s. game yet?

Not sure if y'all opened the link - but pretty favorable review of Newbill from opposing coach:

Not long after watching his Trinity club drop a 68-46 verdict to Strawberry Mansion, Shamrocks coach Larry Kostelac Jr. was raving about Mansion wing D.J. Newbill, the 6-4 senior ticketed for the Big East Conference's Marquette Golden Eagles.

Even dropped the name Gerry McNamara, who poured in 55 points in Bishop Hannan's 82-73 triumph over the Shamrocks in the 2002 state playoffs, in the process.

"Terrific player," Kostelac said, after watching the athletic Newbill ring up 18 points (on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor) and grab eight boards in near-effortless fashion. "Some of the shots he made with Jack Osborne and Mike Diminick [on him] were big time, and that's what big-time players do.

"We've seen kids at the highest level before. I thought McNamara was a terrific high school player and it just so happened that the one year he beat us by scoring 55 and fast-forward one year later and what, he hit for like 17 or 18 against Kansas in the national championship game.

"This kid's going to be a hell of a player," Kostelac continued. "The way he plays fits into that Marquette system. I don't know if you've watched them, but they've got three guards running around and they're jacking it."

Newbill jacked a biggie on Saturday, elevating over Trinity's helpless defenders and burying a 3-ball from deep on the right wing with 0.1 showing on the first-half clock.

That shot also gave Mansion a 32-20 lead at the break.

"Tough shot, what are you going to do?" Kostelac wondered. "That's the level he's at."
"I'm not sure Cadougan would fix the problems on this team. I'm not even convinced he would be better for this team than DeWil is."

Noone here compared him to McNamara. I was just pointing out the article and what the opposing coach said about him. And I agree, if he is half as good would be an enormous asset to our team.

He scored 64 in a game earlier this year.

It will be nice if he pans out.  MU needs some scoring punch off of the bench.  When our go-to guys get gassed, we have had no one to come in and do some scoring since Novak was coming off of the bench his freshman year or when Joe Chapman started at the 3 his senior year for a little and Wes was coming in off the bench.

Newbill being a threat to score and play makes Blue work and Buycks work harder than anyone to not lose minutes to a freshman.

goodgreatgrand

Against the Sisters of the Poor. Doesnt count. Sorry, but I hold all judgement on freshmen until they actually play in an NCAA game. Unless, of course, they happen to come from the same man-child breed that has produced the likes of LeBron, Melo, Stoudamire, Howard, etc. Until then, high D1 kids can beat up on kids that wont be playing college ball at all. I just care more about how they develop once in the program than what they already possess in h.s.

Sounds like he'll fit right in:   :D
"As it was, they triumphed by "only" 61-54 after leading by 14 points with 2:25 left and seeing that bulge evaporate all the way down to three, at 57-54, at 0:50."

(not being negative here, just pointing out the eerie similarity to many of our games this year)
I'm like a turtle, sometimes I get run over by a semi.

Sounds like the guy has watched a lot of our games this year. :o

I'm sure it was the referees fault.
