Bracketology 101 MU a 7 seed
« on: March 12, 2010, 11:04:01 AM »
Homer swears that this is the most accurate of the bracket prognosticators.

from their site:

In the Big East...
The double bye jinx was in full effect in Madison Square Garden on Thursday, as top-seeded Syracuse, second-seeded Pittsburgh, and fourth-seeded Villanova all lost. West Virginia came close to joining that list, but Da'Sean Butler's banked-in three at the buzzer gave the Mountaineers a wild 54-51 win over Cincinnati. Despite their loss, Syracuse is still safe on the 1 line because they won the regular season Big East title by two games. Pitt, meanwhile, dropped down from a 3 seed to a 4 as a result of their loss to Notre Dame. The Irish have now won six in a row and are up to an 8 seed in our latest field. That's a seed line below Marquette, which jumped up from a 9 to a 7 by beating 'Nova. The Wildcats are clinging onto the final spot on the 3 line for now, but they very well could fall to a 4 depending on how teams like Wisconsin, Georgetown, Baylor, and others do from here on out.

I just don't get it. I'd like to think we are a solid 6, but whatever. I always overestimate and get disappointed every year.

Does anyone remember what Cuse was the year they ran the table just to get in?

I don't think we'll get higher than a 6 even if we win the BET. There are other teams that will fare well in there conference tourneys and will even it all out.

Cuse got a 5 that year... and lost to an underseeded Texas A&M.

There's a popular theory that they tired out.  Looking back, they probably wouldn't have made the tourney period had they not made that BET run.  They just caught lightning in a bottle.  They finished #51 in Pomeroy's ratings and were a 5 seed, A&M finished #25 in Pomeroy's ratings and were a 12 seed.  Seems that A&M was just a better team.  Speaking of A&M... wasn't that Buzz' last year there?  They lost by one to the final 4 LSU squad in the next round with Big Baby and Tyrus Thomas.  That was the crazy George Mason tourmanent.

As of right now I think we're a safe 7, win tonight and we probably jump to a 6...if we win the BET then I think it's safe to assume that we could end up being a 5 seed once the tourney starts.

I dont see how we don't get a 4 seed if we win the BEast tournament. That puts us at 24-10 with wins over Xavier, Georgetown (2), Nova and West Virgina (assuming they beat Notre Dame). Are their really 16 teams that have a better resume than 5 wins against the top 20 RPI?

I think being a 7 now is reasonable breing 22-10, the question is......does a loss keep us at 7 or move us to 8? I pray it keeps us at 7. Lets just win and get a 6.

I think we would be just fine as a 6 or a 7 seed...

A 6 seed would be incredible, but I think we will end up a 7.

This was incredible to me at the time, and I had them out in the first round of my bracket simply because I was outraged that they were seeded so high

There is no way that a team that is on the outside looking in before the conference tournament, should be anything higher than a 7 or 8 seed if they go and win the tournament, even with 4 wins in 4 days

If Cuse got a 5, MU could and I believe would get a 5 seed if they won these next two... Lets make it happen Marquettte

well, cuse was a bubble team, not like georgia who got a 14 seed a year or 2 ago. Nad winning the BE tourny will beef up your resume quite a bit.

In the grand scheme of things, how much did our loss to Depaul effect our RPI?  I've been hesitant about our seed for the longest time simply because of how much worse our RPI is than our recent performances.

I don't know what the hell is up with Lunardi! He has MU as a 10 after we just beat Nova! To make me more angry, Illinois is a rising 12 seed with 13, yes 13 losses! Oh and that was before they beat Wisconsin today! To make matters work, after the game they were saying how Illinois is a lock with that win. They have a few good wins and horrible losses to Bradley and Utah. What a joke.

That HAS to be a mistake... ND is a 7 seed on the rise as well.  The only thing I can think is that he didn't really put much effort into getting the seeds to work out so the BEast teams aren't playing each other too early.

EDIT: I also just noticed ND would be in Milwaukee first 2 rounds... that would be like a home game for whoever they are matched up against haha.

The DePaul loss wasn't nearly as detrimental to our RPI as was beating Grambling, Presby, North Florida, South Dakota, Centenary, University of Maryland Eastern Shore - teams all with RPI's in the 300s..other than North Florida...this kills strength of schedule..kills it.  Had MU scheduled teams 100-200 in preseason..their RP is probably around 15.

Interesting... is our pre conference schedule next season any different general RPI wise?
