Big time in the Big Apple. What a helluva JUCO pick-up for Buzz. Unreal.

Love hearing how no one had really heard of him.  I know he was getting some high major interest but what a get by Buzz.  DJO is a stud, and he will get even better.

DJO and Buzz, both diamonds in the rough.

Interesting .. Buzz just said "I'd seen DJO play for 7 minutes before I decided to recruit (sign) him."

All I could think of is that Buzz probably did the same thing with Roseboro.

Yeah, that came to mind too.  I was looking at his stats at St. Bonaventure last night.  Yikes.

OhioGoldenEagle

Roseboro was just a roll of the dice.  Buzz was desperate for a true power forward and probably didn't have MU high on many recruit's lists at that point considering he was only the head coach for 6 months.

Further, I think we can give Buzz a pass considering what his homerun finds in Jimmy Butler/DJO, and quality gets in Buycks and Fulce who is really proving important now that he's getting healthy.

PuertoRicanNightmare

I wonder if BMA has some background on DJO. He's a complete stud.

chapman

Complete different player today compared to yesterday.  Wasn't afraid to pop the three, still utilized the pump fake well.  Most impressed by him being able to change speeds in an instant, either blazing through to the hole or slowing then speeding up again.  He did not do that earlier in the year and that can make a player very dangerous.

AlienWarrior

I was at the game and educated the Vill fans about DJO . They now know who DJO is.

His senior year in North Carolina, 2007, Scout.com had him rated a two star PG who was considering Virginia Commonwealth and William & Mary.  But, it became obvious he wasn't going to qualify, so no offers.  He went to prep school in NC and again failed to qualify, although he rose to a three star recruit in Scout's estimation and was considering Bradley, Charlotte, Morehead State, and Oklahoma.  He then went to Hutchinson JC where he was a First Team All-American.  Most schools assumed he was going to stay another year at Hutchinson, but Buzz knew he was trying to qualify for Division I at Hutchinson and was recruiting him for last year's class.  By the time that word got out that he had qualified, Buzz pretty much had him wrapped up.

Buzz got the jump on other schools because he evidently remembered DJO saying that he wanted to qualify for Division I after his freshman year, and so he kept track of his progress and actively recruited DJO during his first (and only) year at Hutchinson.  A big win for the the man who is "like a turtle, I never forget".

p.s. In 2007, Scout had DJO ranked as the 21st best player in North Carolina!
In 2008, Scout had DJO ranked as the 19th best player in North Carolina.  One spot ahead of him, ranked 18th, was his Patterson school teammate, Justin Brownlee now of St. John's fame.  Three spots ahead of him, ranked 16th, was another Patterson teammate, Freddy Asprilla.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

madtownwarrior

can't we blame the Roseboro recruitment on Maymon and his glowing review of Roseboro after playing with him in AAU?

I am good friends with a few Nova fans.  Last year at MSG they learned who Jimmy Butler was.  This year, they were all very aware of DJO.

HoopsMalone

DJO did show something.  The chance to play at MSG when everyone is watching is Buzz's trump card on other Midwest programs when recruiting.

Loved Jimmy taking some midrange shots.  Can't wait for DJO to develop the same way.

Surround yourself with low mid-major talent and the odds go up that the offense will run through you

From the HS coach of Roseboro, I'd say that miss was on our coaching staff, mostly the assistants.
