Wisconsin gained a verbal commitment on Tuesday from Chicago point guard George Marshall, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Marshall chose the Badgers over Arizona, Baylor, DePaul, Illinois State, Marquette, Ohio, Wake Forest and Xavier.

"Wisconsin had the right mix of academics and athletics for me," Marshall told the paper. "It's a basketball school. Coach (Bo) Ryan is a great coach."

Marshall joins forward Devon Hodges (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville H.S.) in the Badgers' 2011 class.

In my mind it's never good to loose a recruit to Wisconsin

I believe Baylor, DePaul, Illinois State, and Ohio were the only ones to offer.  I think the other schools mentioned had shown interest but not yet offerred.  BMA or GOMU, care to clarify?

butchbadger

I don't think Marquette had actually offered yet.

Blackhat

I'm not sure we offered.

And if we did I'm not sure why, with Cadougan and Reggie Smith on board for the future not to mention Blue could probably handle the point.

This is his offer list on rivals:   (he looks fairly good but not very explosive in his highlight video)

Wisconsin
Baylor
DePaul
Illinois State
Ohio
Xavier

He was at the August Elite Camp...thats about all I really knew about him before he committed last night. The articles I have read since then indicate that we were showing interest, but I'm not sure about an offer...

I do know that UW seems to be making Chicago a priority in 2011 with Hodges, and now Marshall.

But..to say we "lost" him to UW probably isnt accurate.

BTW...Just because we have Junior, Blue, and Smith on board, doesnt mean Buzz wont sign a guard in 2011 (or even with one of the 2 2010 schollys left). Remember, we lose Buycks after next season, and Buzz has stated numerous times that he wants at least 5 guards...

nyg

He's a point guard so what's the point.  We have Junior and Reggie Smith.  Let Mr. Marshal be a Badger.

Reggie is raw, and JC is young, and not a 'true' PG as some people seem to think he is.

He can score, and dishes on his drive.... IIRC.

I'm curious as to how he's not a true point guard. Help me out please.

nevermind, someone set me straight.  I stand corrected.

fail.

edit: I gues I should expand on my thinking.  From the videos of him that I had seen and the stat lines, I assumed he was more of a scorer than he is.  But I guess that is what happens when you only watch a few vids of highlights... you get a false impression.  My mistake.

PuertoRicanNightmare

I think this Reggie Smith kid is going to be spectacular. I think he's a Jonny Flynn type.

Agree that he has the potential to be a very solid contributor, though the Jonny Flynn comparison is dubious.  Very different players from the videos I've seen of Reggie.

How did we lose a recruit to Wisconsin if we never offered him a scholarship?

Agreed...from the moment we signed this kid, I contended that it wouldn't surprise me for him to be in the mix, big-time next year as a freshman..that he could push Junior.  Some on here thought I was crazy..and that Smith isn't a true point guard, etc...All I know is that crazy athleticism, quickness, hops..are hard to keep on the bench.
"I'm not sure Cadougan would fix the problems on this team. I'm not even convinced he would be better for this team than DeWil is."

Not calling you out or busting your chops, I am just curious... Have you watched this kid play?  In person?  Again, just curious.

How strange to get a false impression of a recruit from a highlight video.

Jonny Flynn, really? The same Jonny Flynn that was drafted #6 overall last year?

You guys are really setting yorself up for disappointment, if you are expecting all of this out of Reggie Smith next year.

He is definately a nice addition, and I am happy that we have someone of his caliber at the 5th guard spot next year.  He has alot of potential, and can develop to become a heck of a player. But the fact remains...Buycks, DJO, Junior, and Vander will get the majority of the minutes at guard next year...I have a hard time seeing Smith taking many minutes away from them.

How did we misplace a prospective basketball team member if we did not tender him money for room/board/tuition in exchange for his basketball services?

Not bashing Crean, but when I read the list of schools I twas not impressed.  Not a "national" recruit by ant means.  I like to see guys that have an Arizona, or maybe a Michigan State, or a Florida, or Wake Forest on the list of suitors.  If you see a Duke, UNC, or Kentucky, it would indicate to me that we would have a hard time getting him over those schools - at least for the moment.  But I think who you're recruiting against is a pretty good barometer of the state of your program
