Rutgers loses center

looks like Echenique is leaving Piscataway in the rear-view mirror.

Injured C Greg Echenique to transfer from Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) Rutgers center Greg Echenique is transferring.

The Big East Conference school announced Friday that the sophomore from Venezuela informed the school of his intent to transfer and that he has been granted a conditional release.

Echenique started seven games before his season ended last month when he had surgery to repair a detached retina. He averaged 12.6 points and 7.7 rebounds, while shooting 61 percent from the field with 16 blocks.

Coach Fred Hill said, "Gregory has been a valuable member of our program. We are appreciative of his contributions at Rutgers and wish him the best in his future endeavors."

One less thing to worry about when we play Rutgers, but the condition is probably that he can't come to a Big East school ala Jeronne Maymon.

I believe that is a league rule that a player cannot transfer to another Big East school.

He could if he transfers to a JC first or simply takes a year off. I have no idea what the recovery timeline for a detached retina is, but its possible that Doctors may advise him to avoid sports activities.

From what I gather, its also possible that he may never fully regain his vision in that eye.
