Surgery set for Friday on Dominic James' injured foot

STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS • February 26, 2009

MILWAUKEE — Richmond's Dominic James will have surgery Friday morning on a broken left foot that ended his playing career at Marquette.

The procedure will take place at Aurora Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee, Marquette spokesman Scott Kuykendall wrote in an e-mail at 3 p.m. today.

The senior point guard will face about 100 days of rehabilitation after surgery.

James, a former Richmond High School star, started his team-record 128th game against No. 2-ranked Connecticut on Wednesday night. He played in 129. He missed his only start because of an illness last season.

The break in the fifth metatarsal of his foot happened without contact, said Richmond High School coach Chad Bolser, who spoke with James on Wednsday night.

"This was one of those freak accidents," Bolser said. "There's no collision to look at ... You can't explain it."

Bolser said other players have recovered from similar injuries.

"There would be no reason to think this would affect him down the line," Bolser said.

James is considered a strong candidate to be drafted as a point guard in the first two rounds of the NBA Draft.

He left the game after playing only four minutes in the first half in Wednesday's 93-82 loss. Marquette is ranked eighth in the country.

Marquette coach Buzz Williams said after the loss that James will be badly missed.

"We are hurtful as a program and hurtful as an institution for Dominic," Williams said. "He has been absolutely incredible throughout his career."

Marquette faces a tough finishing stretch, traveling to No. 6 Louisville and No. 1 Pittsburgh before ending the regular season at home against Syracuse on March 7.
