Catholic Knights apartments
« on: February 15, 2009, 09:37:54 PM »
Anybody know anything about these??? I'm starting to look at places for when my lease is up in the summer, thinking of moving downtown. I currently live in Pewaukee right by where I work, and it's pretty boring out here. I'm mid-20's so would like to live downtown, but I'm torn if I want to live right in the thick of it or just outside of town (in Tosa or something).

I gotta admit, being right next to The Al would be pretty cool.

Anybody have any idea how it is? I'm not really interested in living that close to a college campus without being a student, but it's about the most affordable place I can find downtown (aside from the real crappy cheap places).

Is your aim to live in a place with a lot of other 20 somethings?  If so, I would consider the east side or bayview (really affordable places there) over downtown.  What kind of things do you like to do?

No real biggie what the age group is in the apt. I just want to live closer to downtown than I do now. I went to UWM so I'm familiar with the east side, and that would probably be preferred...but I want to cut down the commute to work as much as possible.

Ah, well I know a few people who live in them (all law students).  I haven't heard any complaints from any of them at all about noise or crappy neighbors.  That and it's a sweet connect to 94 West in the morning.

They only take grad students and better ... so you don't have to worry about those darn undergrads ;)  there is a pool on top of the building, so that's kinda nice.  Anyway, probably worth looking into *Shrug*

There's a couple apartment and condo buildings in the upper 5th Ward that are decently priced.  I'm just a few blocks south of the 3rd Ward and walk to work every day.

Historic Fifth Ward Lofts
Teweles Seed Tower Apartments

Those are the two that come to mind, but there's a few others.

Teweles Seed's management is terrible. They are really slow in taking care of things. Also, I have been through more fire alarms in this building then i had in Schroeder Hall. Nice place, but it does have its cons. Also, if the Catholic Knights building is in your price range, these two will not be. unless you will have a roommate, your looking at around 9-1050 a month. Unless you qualify for the income restricted apartments.

Yep.  I was living at Teweles in a really nice apartment on one of the upper floors.  Awesome views of downtown and the lake.  Pimp elevator that opened up into my living room if you punched in your secret code.  Really nice place.

Management sucked and my car got broken into 3 times in the year I lived down there.  Plus it was the victim of a hit and run that I didn't notice until I went to get into my car on a monday morning.

Verdit on Teweles and 5th Ward Lofts:  They are nice, but they're pretty much a dorm atmosphere.  Don't expect much in the way of management and don't live there if late-night ruckus bothers you :)

I don't know much about Teweles, but 5th Ward Lofts is pretty good.  I have not had any problems with noise (you get used to the trains).  Management can be interesting, generally quick to respond but occasionally forgetful.

Amenities are nice and the rooms are beautiful if you like exposed ceilings.  Pricing is true (I don't know what Catholic Knights goes for) ... having a roommate helps bring the cost down for either tremendously.  I didn't have a problem parking on the street, but I got enough tickets for not moving my car every 24hrs that I'm in a $75/month parking spot now.  Fire alarms ... two since I've been here and both were legit.

MU Basketball, try the St Clair Apartments.  I hear they're the best.   :)

Seriously, I had some friends who lived in the Catholic Knights and, unless things have changed drastically, you will be fine there.

Are you going to the opening rounds of the NCAA's this year?

I'm hoping so...how about you? We going to get together for drinks again if so?

Interesting that Teweles came up, I was looking into those. Looked really nice but got pretty bad reviews overall.

Catholic Knights is low to mid $800's, but includes heat which is nice. Plus a parking spot underneath which is huge as well.

The lofts in 5th Ward are just a tad pricey. Maybe a roommate would be the best way to go.

I'm hoping to be there, but it depends on my schedule and where we end up.  Put it this way, if we're both there, the first round is on me.

i have a very similar story.  i used to live in the teweles in an upper floor apartment with the views and the elevator, etc.  it was an awesome apartment, however the management made it easy for me to decide to leave after one year.  they were awful.  lower floors were always a bit loud especially thanks to thin walls and the student/low income housing they provided at a discounted rate.  to try and cut down on crime outside of the building they gave a public safety firm the penthouse in exchange for patrol.  all these guys did was act like RA's.  myself and my roommate were out of college and working professional 8-5 jobs.  we had one formal Christmas party on a Friday night with about 6 friends.  they came pounding on the door at 10pm saying we were being too loud saying they would call the cops.  i made a couple comments, apologized for the noise, and we left to go out.  the next day we had an eviction notice from management saying the security filed a complaint.  i fought it and won, but in hindsight they may have been trying to do me a favor.  avoid the Teweles like the plague unless you don't mind being treated as if you are in college.

Personally I wouldn't recommend it. It's expensive- you're better off living somewhere closer to the lake for that price- and it's kind of annoying living on campus and working or in grad school (speak from experience). I wouldn't encourage you to live on campus. Just a headache with all those bad IL drivers around move in time as well as any other weekend little Debbie needs to be taken back to the dorms. I would rather live on the east side with all the weirdo lefties than on campus with all the 18 year olds. Plus, east side/shorewood will yield a fun 20 something crowd, but not an annoying 20 something crowd.
